Lesson Plan

Regrouping Rhapsody: Add & Subtract!

Students will be able to confidently add and subtract two-digit numbers, with and without regrouping, by the end of this 15-minute lesson.

Understanding addition and subtraction with regrouping is a foundational skill in mathematics, essential for daily life tasks like managing money and solving more complex problems.

Audience

Elementary School Students

Time

15 minutes

Approach

Direct instruction followed by guided and independent practice.

Materials

Whiteboard or projector, Markers or pens, and Regrouping Rhapsody Worksheet

Prep

Review Materials

5 minutes

Review the Regrouping Rhapsody Lesson Plan and Regrouping Rhapsody Worksheet to ensure familiarity with the content and activities.
Prepare the whiteboard or projector for displaying examples.

Step 1

Introduction to Regrouping

3 minutes

Gather students' attention.
Introduce the concept of addition and subtraction, emphasizing that sometimes we need to 'regroup' or 'borrow and carry' numbers.
Use a simple example on the board to illustrate: "What happens when we have more than 10 ones?"

Step 2

Guided Practice: Addition with Regrouping

4 minutes

Display a two-digit addition problem requiring regrouping (e.g., 27 + 15).
Walk through the steps together, explaining how to regroup the ones to the tens place.
Work through one or two more examples with student input.

Step 3

Guided Practice: Subtraction with Regrouping

4 minutes

Display a two-digit subtraction problem requiring regrouping (e.g., 42 - 18).
Explain how to 'borrow' from the tens place to solve the ones column.
Work through one or two more examples with student input.

Step 4

Independent Practice

3 minutes

Distribute the Regrouping Rhapsody Worksheet.
Instruct students to complete the problems independently.
Circulate around the room to provide individual support as needed.

Slide Deck

Welcome to Regrouping Rhapsody!

Today, we're going to become masters of adding and subtracting, even when it gets a little tricky!

Welcome students and introduce the day's topic: adding and subtracting numbers. Explain that sometimes numbers need to 'move' or 'change places' to help us solve problems, which is called regrouping.

Adding with a Twist!

Let's try 27 + 15

  1. Add the ones column (7 + 5)
  2. If the sum is 10 or more, 'regroup' to the tens place!
  3. Add the tens column

Introduce a simple addition problem that requires regrouping. Walk through it step-by-step, showing how to add the ones, then regroup if the sum is 10 or more, and finally add the tens. Encourage student participation.

Subtracting with a Secret!

What about 42 - 18?

  1. Look at the ones column (2 - 8)
  2. If you can't subtract, 'borrow' from the tens place!
  3. Now you can subtract the ones, then the tens!

Now, move to subtraction with regrouping. Present a problem and explain how to 'borrow' from the tens place when the top digit in the ones column is smaller than the bottom digit. Emphasize the change in the tens column after borrowing.

Your Turn to Shine!

Time to practice your regrouping skills!

Use your Regrouping Rhapsody Worksheet to show what you've learned. You've got this!

Encourage students to practice the skills they've learned on their own using the worksheet. Remind them to think carefully about when to regroup for both addition and subtraction. Offer individual help as needed.
