Reflective Story Circle

Build empathy and listening skills

In this lesson, students will participate in a Reflective Story Circle where they will share personal stories about overcoming challenges or experiencing joy. This activity is designed to foster a supportive classroom environment by enhancing empathy and active listening skills. By sharing and listening to each other's stories, students will develop a deeper understanding of their peers and build a sense of community.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Welcome students and explain the purpose of the Reflective Story Circle.

  • Introduce the talking stick or object that will be used to indicate the speaker.

Step 2

Story Sharing

15 minutes

  • Invite students to sit in a circle.
  • Explain the guidelines for sharing stories: one person speaks at a time, and others listen respectfully.
  • Encourage students to share a personal story about overcoming a challenge or a joyful moment from the past year.
  • Use the talking stick to manage turns.

Step 3

Reflection

5 minutes

  • After all stories have been shared, lead a brief reflection session.
  • Ask students to think about what they learned from their peers' stories.
  • Discuss how listening to others' experiences can help us understand and support each other better.

Step 4

Closure

5 minutes

  • Thank students for their participation and sharing.
  • Encourage them to continue practicing empathy and active listening in their daily interactions.
