Reflect & Grow: Year-End Reflection

Welcome! Today we’ll reflect on your behavior, academics, personal growth, and our counseling time together. Then, we’ll set goals for next year.

Please open your Year-End Reflection Worksheet.

Greet the student warmly. Explain that this session is about looking back on their year and planning for next year. Introduce the Year-End Reflection Worksheet and encourage the student to follow along on their worksheet as you go through each section.

Behavior Reflection

  1. What behavior or habit are you most proud of this year?
  2. What was one challenge you faced with behavior or self-control? What could you do differently next time?

Prompt the student to fill out the behavior section on their worksheet. Ask for examples and stories to make it concrete. Allow about 5 minutes for writing, then discuss.

Academic Reflection

  1. Which subject did you do best in? What strategies or supports helped you succeed?
  2. Which subject was most challenging? What might help you improve next year?

Guide the student through their academic reflections. Ask follow-up questions about study strategies or supports that helped.

Personal Growth Reflection

  1. What is one thing you learned about yourself this year?
  2. When did you use a new coping skill or strategy we practiced? How did it help you?

Encourage the student to think about personal growth—skills, feelings, or habits they developed. Reinforce any coping strategies they mention.

Counseling Reflection

  1. What did you enjoy most about our counseling sessions this year?
  2. If you could change one thing about our sessions (activities, topics, frequency), what would it be and why?

Gather feedback to improve future sessions. Listen carefully and take notes on preferences or suggestions.

Setting SMART Goals

Let’s set goals that are:
• Specific
• Measurable
• Achievable
• Relevant
• Time-bound

Explain each element of SMART goals with a quick example (e.g., reading goal, behavior goal). Make sure the student understands each part.

Academic & Behavior Goals

Academic Goal:
• Goal: ____________________
• How will you measure progress? ____________________
• By when will you achieve it? ____________________

Behavior/Habit Goal:
• Goal: ____________________
• How will you measure progress? ____________________
• By when will you achieve it? ____________________

Help the student draft an academic goal, then a behavior/habit goal. Check that each goal meets SMART criteria.

Personal Growth Goal & Next Steps

Personal Growth Goal:
• Goal: ____________________
• How will you measure progress? ____________________
• By when will you achieve it? ____________________

Next Steps: Bring your completed worksheet to our next session so we can finalize your plan and track your progress!

Guide the student to set a personal growth goal. Then wrap up by confirming the next steps and schedule.
