Lesson Plan
Reflect & Connect
Students will be able to define 'reflection' in their own words and practice reflecting on a recent experience, identifying how it made them feel and what they might have learned.
Learning to reflect is a superpower! It helps students understand their own feelings and actions, make smarter choices, and grow from every experience – big or small. This crucial skill builds self-awareness, critical thinking, and social-emotional intelligence, preparing them to navigate challenges and celebrate successes with greater understanding.

What Does Reflection Mean?
It's like looking in a mirror, but for your thoughts and feelings!
We look back at what happened to learn and grow.
Welcome students and introduce the idea of looking at ourselves and our thoughts. Connect to the warm-up if you used a mirror. Emphasize that reflection is more than just seeing an image.
Reflecting: More Than Just Looking
When we reflect, we ask ourselves:
* What happened?
* How did I feel?
* What did I learn?
* How can I use this for next time?
Explain reflection in more detail for older students. It's about thinking deeply about experiences. Emphasize the 'what happened,' 'how I felt,' and 'what I learned' aspects.
Your Reflection Challenge!
Think about a recent experience.
Maybe a time you solved a problem, learned something new, or felt a strong emotion.
What happened? How did you feel?
Prompt students to think about a recent experience, not just a 'fun' one, but one they can learn from. It could be a challenge, a success, or something new.
Deep Dive with a Partner!
Turn to your partner.
Share your experience, how you felt, and what you learned.
Ask your partner questions and listen carefully.
Transition to the discussion activity. Remind them to share their full thoughts and listen actively to their partners.
My Reflection Storyboard
Create a storyboard of your experience.
Draw what happened, how you felt, and what you learned.
Use captions to explain your reflection!
Introduce the storyboard activity. Explain that they will illustrate the sequence of an event and their thoughts/feelings.
The Power of 'Why'
How has reflecting helped you today?
Share one important thought or feeling you gained from this process!
Conclude the lesson by asking for a deeper, one-word reflection, leading into the cool-down. Encourage them to think about the impact of reflection.

Warm Up: My Reflection Journey
"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to embark on a journey of self-discovery. Has anyone ever thought about what it means to 'reflect'?
That's a great start! When we reflect, it's like using a special mirror in our minds. Not a mirror that shows us our face, but one that shows us our thoughts, our feelings, and our experiences. Today, we're going to learn about the power of reflection and how it helps us grow."
Introducing Reflection (5 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 1: 'What Does Reflection Mean?')
Just like a mirror helps us see ourselves, reflection helps us understand ourselves better. It's about taking a moment to look back at something that happened. (Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 2: 'Reflecting: More Than Just Looking')
When we reflect, we ask ourselves these important questions:
* What happened?
* How did it make me feel?
* What did I learn from it?
* And how can I use this learning for next time?
It’s like reviewing a movie in our minds, but with a purpose! Why do you think it's important to think about these questions? What are some benefits of reflecting on our experiences? For example, reflection helps you:
- Understand your feelings: Why did that make me happy? What made me feel frustrated?
- Make better choices: If something didn't go well, you can think about how to do it differently next time.
- Learn and grow: Every experience, good or tough, can teach you something new about yourself and the world.
- Connect with others: When you understand yourself, it's easier to understand your friends and family.
Exactly! Reflection helps us understand our emotions, make better choices, and learn from every part of our lives."
Discussion: Deep Dive with a Partner! (5 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 3: 'Your Reflection Challenge!')
Now, let’s put our reflection skills to practice! I want you to think about a recent experience you had. It could be something exciting, a time you solved a problem, or even a moment when you felt a strong emotion like frustration or joy. Close your eyes for a moment and remember that experience. What happened? How did it make you feel? What did you learn from it?
(Give students a moment to think.)
(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 4: 'Deep Dive with a Partner!')
Now, turn to the person next to you. I want you to share your experience, tell them how it made you feel, and most importantly, what you learned from it. Remember to listen actively when your partner shares and you can even ask them a question about their reflection! Who would like to share their insightful reflections with the whole class?
"
Activity: My Reflection Storyboard (5 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 5: 'My Reflection Storyboard')
Wonderful discussions, everyone! Now, we’re going to create a 'Reflection Storyboard.' On your paper, you will draw a series of pictures that tell the story of the experience you just reflected on. For each picture, write a short caption explaining what happened, how you felt, and what you learned. Think about how the experience unfolded and what insights you gained.
(Circulate and provide support, encouraging detailed drawings and reflective captions.)"
Cool Down: The Power of 'Why' (2 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 6: 'The Power of 'Why'')
Fantastic storyboards! To wrap up our lesson, I want everyone to think of one important thought or feeling you gained from today's reflection. It could be a new understanding, a feeling of accomplishment, or a realization about yourself. When I say go, share your important thought or feeling with a neighbor, and try to explain why you chose it. Go!
Thank you for taking a deep dive into reflection with me today!"
