Lesson Plan

Reflect & Connect

Students will be able to define 'reflection' in their own words and practice reflecting on a recent experience by sharing their thoughts with a partner.

Learning to reflect helps students understand their feelings, make better choices, and connect with others. This foundational skill supports emotional intelligence and critical thinking from a young age.

What Does a Mirror Do?

A mirror shows us what we look like.
Today, we're going to use our minds to "mirror" our thoughts and feelings!

Welcome students and introduce the idea of looking at ourselves and our thoughts. Connect to the warm-up if you used a mirror.

Reflecting Means Looking Back

It means thinking about:
* What happened?
* How did it make me feel?
* What did I learn?

Explain reflection simply. It's like replaying a movie in our mind about something that happened. Emphasize feelings.

Time to Reflect!

Think about something fun you did recently.
Maybe playing outside, reading a book, or a special meal!
How did it make you feel?

Prompt students to think about something fun. Give them a moment before moving to the discussion activity.

Share Your Shine!

Turn to your partner.
Share your fun memory and how it made you feel!
Listen to your partner too.

Transition to the discussion activity. Remind them to listen to their partners.

My Reflection Portrait

Draw a picture of something that made you happy today.
Think about why it made you happy as you draw!

Introduce the drawing activity. Connect it to expressing their happy reflection visually.

One Word Reflection

How do you feel after thinking about your happy memories?
Share one word!

Conclude the lesson by asking for a one-word reflection, leading into the cool-down.

Reflect & Connect Script

Warm Up: Mirror, Mirror!

"Good morning, everyone! Let's start our day by looking at ourselves. Does anyone know what a mirror does?

That's right! A mirror shows us what we look like. It reflects our image back to us. Today, we're going to use our minds to 'mirror' our thoughts and feelings! We're going to learn about something called reflection."

Introducing Reflection (5 minutes)

"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 1: 'What Does a Mirror Do?')

Just like a mirror shows us our outside, reflecting helps us look at our inside—our thoughts, our feelings, and our actions. (Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 2: 'Reflecting Means Looking Back')

When we reflect, we think about:
* What happened?
* How did it make me feel?
* What did I learn?

It’s like replaying a little movie of something that happened in our minds. Why do you think it might be important to think about these things?

That's right! It helps us understand ourselves better and learn for next time."

Discussion: Share Your Shine (5 minutes)

"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 3: 'Time to Reflect!')

Now, let’s practice reflecting! I want you to think about something fun you did recently. Maybe it was playing outside, reading a favorite book, or having a special meal. Close your eyes for a moment and remember that fun thing. How did it make you feel? Happy? Excited? Peaceful?

(Give students a moment to think.)

(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 4: 'Share Your Shine!')

Now, turn to the person next to you. I want you to share your fun memory and tell them how it made you feel. And remember to listen carefully when your partner shares their memory! Who would like to share what they reflected on with the whole class?

"

Activity: My Reflection Portrait (5 minutes)

"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 5: 'My Reflection Portrait')

Great sharing, everyone! Now we’re going to draw our reflections. On your paper, I want you to draw a picture of something that made you happy today. It could be the fun thing you just talked about, or something else from today. As you draw, really think about why it made you happy. What was it about that moment that brought you joy?

(Circulate and provide support as students draw.)"

Cool Down: One Word Reflection (2 minutes)

"(Display Slide Deck: Reflect & Connect - Slide 6: 'One Word Reflection')

Wonderful drawings! To finish up our lesson today, I want everyone to think of one word that describes how you feel after reflecting today. It could be peaceful, happy, thoughtful, or anything else. When I say go, you can share your word with a neighbor as you get ready to move to our next activity. Go!

Thank you for reflecting with me today!"
