Script
Back-to-School Success Script
Use this word-for-word script to guide your 20-minute individual session. Speak slowly, pause for the student, and use the blank lines to let them think and respond.
1. Warm-Up (3 minutes)
Teacher: Hi there! It’s so great to see you today. How have you been since school last let out?
Teacher: Thank you for sharing! Today, we’re going to talk about tools and skills that can help you have a fantastic year at school.
Teacher: I’m going to give you a sheet called the Warm-Up Activity Sheet. It has three prompts for you to think about:
- “My favorite back-to-school memory”
- “One thing I’m looking forward to”
- “A challenge I’m concerned about”
Teacher: Take a moment to write or draw your responses.
Teacher: Awesome—would you like to share one of your answers with me?
(If the student hesitates: “I’d love to hear whichever one you’re most comfortable talking about.”)
2. Video Viewing (5 minutes)
Teacher: Next, we’re going to watch a short video that highlights three big success tips: organization, goal-setting, and communication.
Teacher: As you watch the Back-to-School Success Video, try to notice two or three ideas you think are most helpful.
(Press play.)
(Pause at the end of the video.)
Teacher: Great—thank you for watching! Which tips stood out to you?
(Prompt if needed: “Was there something about keeping your desk tidy or writing down your assignments?”)
3. Guided Discussion (7 minutes)
Teacher: Let’s talk about each tip and how it could fit into your day-to-day routine.
A. Organization
Teacher: The video suggested setting up a system for your materials—like folders or binders. How might you organize your backpack or desk?
(Follow-up if unclear: “What color folders do you like? Could you label them by subject?”)
B. Goal-Setting
Teacher: Next, the video talked about setting a goal. If you could pick one thing to work on in your first week, what would it be?
(Ask: “How will you know you’ve reached that goal?”)
C. Communication
Teacher: Finally, the video mentioned talking with teachers and classmates. How do you usually let someone know if you have a question in class?
(Prompt: “Do you raise your hand? Send an email? Talk after class?”)
Teacher: You’ve given me some great ideas! I’ll help you record them on our Goal-Setting Worksheet.
4. Goal-Setting Activity (4 minutes)
Teacher: On this worksheet, we’ll set one specific, measurable goal for this coming week.
Teacher: Let’s pick your goal first. You mentioned wanting to _____________________. Is that right?
Teacher: Now, let’s make it measurable. How will you track when you’ve done it?
Teacher: Finally, when will you review your progress?
Teacher: Fantastic—that’s a strong goal. Great work filling out your Goal-Setting Worksheet.
5. Wrap-Up (1 minute)
Teacher: You did an amazing job today! Let’s quickly review:
- You thought about your favorite memory, what you’re looking forward to, and a challenge.
- You watched a video and picked out tips on organization, goal setting, and communication.
- You set one clear goal for the week and decided how you’ll track it.
Teacher: Remember to look at your goal every day—that will help you stay on track. I’m proud of the ideas you shared, and I can’t wait to check in on your progress soon.
Teacher: Thanks for your focus today. Keep up the great work, and have a wonderful day!
