Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

Step 1

Warm-up & Introduction (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Greet students and ask them about a time they found it hard to start something. (e.g., a drawing, a puzzle, homework).
  • Introduce the concept of 'task initiation' and explain that today they will learn a special strategy to help them get started easily, just like getting ready for a race! Use the Launching Our Learning Slide Deck slides 1-2.

Step 2

The 'Ready, Set, Go!' Strategy (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Present the 'Ready, Set, Go!' strategy using the Launching Our Learning Slide Deck slides 3-6.
    • Ready: Understand the task (What do I need to do?).
    • Set: Break it down (What's the very first tiny step?).
    • Go!: Just start that first step! (Even a small start is a start!).
  • Model the strategy with a simple classroom task (e.g., 'Clean up my desk' - First step: 'Put away one pencil'). Ask for student examples and practice breaking them down.

Step 3

First Step Fun Race Game (10 minutes)

10 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups.
  • Explain the rules of the First Step Fun Race Game: Students will draw task cards and identify the very first step.
  • Facilitate the game, encouraging students to verbalize their first steps and celebrate small wins. Use the game to reinforce the 'Set' and 'Go!' parts of the strategy.

Step 4

My Task Starter Cards (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Distribute the My Task Starter Cards Worksheet and pencils/crayons.
  • Instruct students to think of a task they often find hard to start and write down the first tiny step for it on their card.
  • Encourage them to draw a picture or symbol to represent their first step.
  • Explain that these cards can be used as a reminder whenever they feel stuck. Conclude with Launching Our Learning Slide Deck slide 7.

Ready, Set, Go! Starting Tasks!

Have you ever wanted to do something, but it was hard to even start?
Like a big drawing, a tricky puzzle, or even cleaning your room?
It happens to everyone!

Welcome students and set an inviting tone. Ask them to think about a time they found it hard to start something. This helps activate prior knowledge and connect to the lesson's relevance.

What is Task Initiation?

It means: Getting Started!
It's like getting ready for a race.
You need to be Ready, then get Set, and then Go!

Introduce the term 'task initiation' in a kid-friendly way. Explain that it's about getting started. Connect it to something exciting like a race.

Step 1: READY!

What do you need to do?
- Understand the task.
- What are the instructions?
- What materials do I need?

Example: My teacher told me to write 3 sentences about my weekend.

Introduce the first step of the strategy: Ready. Emphasize understanding what needs to be done. Give a simple example.

Step 2: SET!

What's the very first tiny step?
- Break the task into super small parts.
- Find the absolute easiest thing to do first.

Example: The first tiny step is to get my paper and pencil.

Introduce the second step: Set. Focus on breaking the task down into a tiny first step. This is crucial for reducing overwhelm.

Step 3: GO!

Just start that first step!
- Don't wait for everything to be perfect.
- A small start is a BIG success!

Example: I will pick up my pencil.

Introduce the third step: Go! Encourage students to just start that one small step. Reassure them that a small start is a great start.

Ready, Set, Go! Review

  1. READY: Understand the task.
    2. SET: Break it down (first tiny step!).
    3. GO!: Start that first tiny step!

Summarize the strategy quickly. This slide serves as a quick visual reminder.

You've Got This!

Now you have a secret power to start anything!
Use Ready, Set, Go! for schoolwork, chores, and even playing!
You are an amazing task starter!

Concluding slide. Reinforce the idea that they can use this strategy in many situations. Encourage them to try it out.

Game

Esimese Sammu Lõbus Võistlus!

Eesmärk: Harjutada erinevate ülesannete esimese pisikese sammu tuvastamist.

Mängijad: Väikesed rühmad (2-4 õpilast)

Materjalid:

Kuidas mängida:

  1. Sega ülesandekaardid: Aseta kõik ülesandekaardid pildipoolega allapoole rühma keskele kuhja.

  2. Mängija 1 kord: Esimene mängija tõmbab kaardi kuhja pealt.

  3. Loe ülesanne: Mängija loeb ülesande oma rühmale valjusti ette.

  5. Järgmine mängija: Mäng jätkub järgmise mängijaga, kes tõmbab uue kaardi.

Võistluse võitja: Võitjaid ega kaotajaid pole, on ainult suurepärased ülesande alustajad! Eesmärk on aidata üksteisel saada heaks nende esimeste sammude leidmisel.
