Slide Deck

Falling into Friendship

A fun autumn icebreaker to help us get to know one another!

Get ready to share your fall favorites and learn about your classmates.

Welcome students! Introduce our icebreaker slide deck. Explain we’ll look at autumn pictures, answer prompts, and share with a partner.

Today’s Icebreaker

  1. Discuss autumn prompts together
  2. Use sentence starters to help share
  3. Turn and talk with a partner
  4. Listen and learn about each other

Explain the flow: we’ll view prompts, think quietly, then volunteer or turn-and-talk.

Prompt 1: Favorite Fall Tradition

What is your favorite fall tradition?
• Trick-or-treating or carving pumpkins?
• Family dinners or festivals?

Think for a moment, then share!

Read the slide aloud. Show the pumpkin and family images. Give students 30 seconds to think and 1–2 volunteers to respond.

Prompt 2: Autumn Colors

Which fall color do you love most?
• Red, orange, yellow, brown, or purple?

Tell us why that color stands out!

Encourage students to name colors and why they like them. Display a leaf border.

Prompt 3: Fall Foods

What cozy fall food do you enjoy?
• Apple cider or pumpkin pie?
• Warm soup or roasted marshmallows?

Share your favorite autumn treat!

Show pictures of apples, pies, soups. Ask for quick ideas, then volunteers.

Prompt 4: Seasonal Activities

Which fall activity do you like?
• Jumping in leaf piles?
• Visiting a pumpkin patch?
• Reading by the fire?

Tell us your top pick!

Add clip art of leaves blowing or kids playing. Invite ideas aloud.

Use These Starters

• “My favorite fall tradition is ___ because ___.”
• “I like ___ color because ___.”
• “I enjoy eating ___ when it’s autumn.”
• “In fall, I like to ___.”

Point out the sentence starters. Encourage students to use them to help structure answers.

Share with a Friend

  1. Turn to your neighbor.
  2. Use a sentence starter to share one prompt answer.
  3. Listen carefully and ask a question.

Ready, set, fall into friendship!

Have students turn to a partner. Monitor discussions and prompt quieter students to share.

Materials Needed:

  • Pumpkin templates (one per student)
  • Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
  • Optional: Sentence frame cards or printed sentence starters

Worksheet Template:

My Pumpkin Introduction

Name: ____________________

Directions for Teachers

  1. Distribute one pumpkin template and art materials to each student.
  2. Invite students to write their name, favorite fall activity, and a fun fact about themselves on their pumpkin.
  3. Encourage students to color and decorate their pumpkins, and optionally draw a small illustration.

    • “My name is ___. My favorite fall activity is ___ because ___. A fun fact about me is ___.”
  5. After 2–3 minutes of sharing, prompt students to rotate to a new partner and repeat until time is up (about 3–4 rotations).
  6. Gather students and invite a few volunteers to show their pumpkins and share one unique thing they learned about a classmate.
  7. Collect the completed pumpkins to create a “Pumpkin Patch Introductions” bulletin board display.

Differentiation & Supports:

  • Provide sentence frame handouts or display frames on chart paper for students who need language support.
  • Allow drawing-only responses for students with writing challenges; partner can scribe for them if needed.
  • Offer extra time or simplified prompts for students who need additional processing time.
