Transition Success Map

Students will map and organize their personalized morning routines, identify independent tasks, and set a one-step goal to boost confidence and self-reliance.

Mastering morning routines fosters essential life skills, promotes self-reliance, and builds confidence for smoother daily transitions at school and home.

5 minutes

  • Review the Becoming Independent slide deck to familiarize yourself with prompts and examples.
  • Print one copy of the Daily Routine Checklist per student.
  • Ensure projector or interactive display is set up and working.
  • Gather sticky notes or exit ticket paper for the final step.

Step 1

Introduction & Objective

5 minutes

  • Display the first slides of Becoming Independent.
  • Read aloud the lesson objective: mapping morning routines to foster independence.
  • Ask students: “Why is having a clear routine helpful?”
  • Check for understanding: Look for thumbs-up/thumbs-down responses and clarify any questions.

Step 2

Guided Demonstration

8 minutes

  • Model completing a morning routine using the projector and the checklist format.
  • Think aloud each step: waking up, dressing, breakfast, packing bag, etc.
  • Emphasize time estimates and materials needed (e.g., uniform, lunchbox).
  • Ask: “After breakfast, what’s your next step?” to prompt student input.
  • Check for understanding: Invite volunteers to suggest the next routine task.

Step 3

Independent Mapping

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Daily Routine Checklist to each student.
  • Instruct students to list their own morning tasks in order, include times and needed items.
  • Circulate to support students who need help sequencing or estimating times.
  • Check for understanding: Review a few student checklists to ensure completeness.

Step 4

Pair Share & Reflection

5 minutes

  • Have students pair up and exchange their completed checklists.
  • Partners identify one task they could improve to become more independent.
  • Encourage them to offer one tip to each other (e.g., lay out clothes the night before).
  • Check for understanding: Ask pairs to share one tip with the class.

Step 5

Exit Ticket

2 minutes

  • Provide each student a sticky note or slip of paper.
  • Prompt: “Write one goal you will practice tomorrow morning to be more independent.”
  • Collect exit tickets as students leave to review and follow up.

Morning Routines for Success

Welcome the students and introduce today’s topic. Explain that routines help us become more independent by giving structure to our day.

Why Routines Matter

Cover each bullet point briefly. Ask for a quick thumbs-up if they agree, and give a real-life example for each.

Example Morning Routine

7:00 AM – Wake Up
7:10 AM – Brush Teeth & Wash Face

7:30 AM – Eat Breakfast
7:45 AM – Pack Backpack
7:55 AM – Leave for School

Walk through this example step by step. Emphasize estimating time and gathering needed items for each task.

Think of one morning task you do every day.

Pair up and discuss:

  1. What is the task?
  2. How does it help you be more independent?

Instruct students to think silently for 30 seconds, then pair up for discussion. Circulate to listen in and prompt deeper thinking.

Mapping Your Routine

Tomorrow you’ll complete the Daily Routine Checklist worksheet:
• List your personal morning tasks
• Add times and needed items
• Identify one task to improve

Explain that tomorrow they will use the worksheet to map their own routines. Point out each section they’ll fill in.
