The Mysterious Migration of Monarch Butterflies
Every year, something truly extraordinary happens in the insect world: millions of monarch butterflies embark on an epic journey across North America. These delicate, orange-and-black creatures, known for their striking beauty, undertake one of the longest insect migrations on Earth, flying thousands of miles from the United States and Canada to warmer climates in Mexico and California.
The journey itself is a marvel of nature. Unlike many migratory birds or mammals, it's not the same generation of butterflies that makes the entire round trip. The monarchs that fly south in the autumn are often called the "super generation." These butterflies live much longer than their summer counterparts (up to eight months compared to a few weeks) and are the ones that make the incredible journey to overwintering sites.
Most eastern North American monarchs travel to mountainous oyamel fir forests in central Mexico. Here, millions of butterflies cluster together on trees, forming breathtaking, shimmering blankets of orange. The climate in these high-altitude forests provides the perfect conditions: cool enough to conserve their energy but warm enough to prevent freezing. Western North American monarchs, on the other hand, typically migrate to coastal California, finding shelter in groves of eucalyptus and Monterey pine trees.
But how do these tiny creatures navigate such vast distances to specific locations they've never seen before? Scientists believe they use a combination of environmental cues, including the sun's position, the Earth's magnetic field, and even the direction of winds. This innate ability to find their way is one of the most astonishing aspects of their migration.
Upon arriving at their winter homes, the monarchs enter a state of semi-hibernation, conserving energy until spring. As temperatures rise, they become more active, mate, and then begin their shorter journey north. The females lay eggs on milkweed plants in the southern United States, and then these "super generation" monarchs die. Their offspring continue the journey northward, with subsequent generations completing the migration back to the northern breeding grounds. It can take up to four or five generations to complete the full return trip.
However, the monarch butterfly's incredible journey is under threat. Habitat loss, particularly the destruction of milkweed (their sole food source for caterpillars), and climate change are significant challenges. Conservation efforts, such as planting milkweed and protecting overwintering sites, are crucial to ensure that future generations can continue to witness and study this truly magnificent natural phenomenon.

Directions: Read the passage "The Mysterious Migration of Monarch Butterflies" carefully. Then, answer the questions below using complete sentences. Be sure to refer back to the text to support your answers.
- What is the main topic of the reading passage?
- Where do most eastern North American monarch butterflies migrate to for the winter?
- What is unique about the "super generation" of monarch butterflies compared to summer generations?
- List two ways scientists believe monarch butterflies navigate during their migration.
- Why is milkweed important to monarch butterflies? What are two major threats to their migration?
- Based on the text, what can you infer about the importance of specific environmental conditions for the monarchs' survival during migration?
Answer Key
Answer Key: Comprehension Quest: The Mysterious Migration of Monarch Butterflies
1. What is the main topic of the reading passage?
- Thought Process: The passage introduces monarch butterflies and immediately focuses on their "epic journey" and "long insect migrations." This indicates the main idea is about their migratory habits.
- Answer: The main topic of the reading passage is the extraordinary annual migration of monarch butterflies across North America.
2. Where do most eastern North American monarch butterflies migrate to for the winter?
- Thought Process: The text explicitly states, "Most eastern North American monarchs travel to mountainous oyamel fir forests in central Mexico."
- Answer: Most eastern North American monarch butterflies migrate to mountainous oyamel fir forests in central Mexico for the winter.
3. What is unique about the "super generation" of monarch butterflies compared to summer generations?
- Thought Process: The passage describes the "super generation" as living "much longer than their summer counterparts (up to eight months compared to a few weeks)."
- Answer: The "super generation" of monarch butterflies is unique because they live much longer, up to eight months, compared to the summer generations which only live for a few weeks.
4. List two ways scientists believe monarch butterflies navigate during their migration.
- Thought Process: The text mentions, "Scientists believe they use a combination of environmental cues, including the sun's position, the Earth's magnetic field, and even the direction of winds." Any two of these would be correct.
- Answer: Scientists believe monarch butterflies navigate using the sun's position and the Earth's magnetic field (or the direction of winds).
5. Why is milkweed important to monarch butterflies? What are two major threats to their migration?
- Thought Process: The passage states milkweed is "their sole food source for caterpillars." For threats, it lists "Habitat loss, particularly the destruction of milkweed... and climate change."
- Answer: Milkweed is important to monarch butterflies because it is the sole food source for their caterpillars. Two major threats to their migration are habitat loss (especially the destruction of milkweed) and climate change.
6. Based on the text, what can you infer about the importance of specific environmental conditions for the monarchs' survival during migration?
- Thought Process: The text describes the oyamel fir forests as providing "perfect conditions: cool enough to conserve their energy but warm enough to prevent freezing." This highlights the necessity of very specific temperatures for their survival during overwintering. It also mentions "finding shelter in groves" for Western monarchs, implying a need for protected environments.
- Answer: We can infer that specific environmental conditions are crucial for the monarchs' survival. The text highlights that the oyamel fir forests offer a climate that is cool enough to conserve energy but warm enough to prevent freezing, which is essential for their overwintering. This suggests that without these precise conditions, the butterflies would struggle to survive the winter and complete their migration.
