Lesson Plan

Quick Fluency Check Plan

Conduct a structured 10-minute session to measure and record a 5th grade student’s oral reading fluency (WPM and errors) for progress monitoring.

Regular, precise fluency checks help identify patterns in reading accuracy and rate, guide targeted interventions, and track growth for students needing intensive support.

Audience

5th Grade Student

Time

10 minutes

Approach

Timed trials with data recording and analysis.

Materials

One-on-One Fluency Tracker, Reading Passage (teacher-selected), and Timer or Stopwatch

Prep

Prepare Materials

5 minutes

  • Print one copy of the One-on-One Fluency Tracker worksheet per student
  • Select or photocopy a short reading passage at the student’s instructional level
  • Ensure a timer or stopwatch is available
  • Review error-marking conventions (e.g., substitutions, omissions, hesitations)

Step 1

Introduction

1 minute

  • Greet the student and explain the purpose: to see how smoothly and accurately they read aloud
  • Show the One-on-One Fluency Tracker and describe the three 1-minute trials
  • Remind the student to read to the best of their ability each time

Step 2

Fluency Trials

5 minutes

  • Trial 1–3 (repeat for each trial):
    • Start the timer for 1 minute and ask the student to begin reading the selected passage aloud
    • Mark each error on the tracker as it occurs
    • When time is up, record total words read, errors, and calculate WPM (words read minus errors)
    • Allow a brief 30-second rest between trials

Step 3

Summary & Analysis

2 minutes

  • Compute the average WPM across all three trials and total errors on the tracker
  • Note any patterns in miscues (e.g., self-corrections, pacing issues)
  • Ask the student how they felt about their reading and note observations

Step 4

Next Steps Discussion

2 minutes

  • Review the data with the student and praise strengths (e.g., steady pace, few miscues)
  • Identify one focus area (e.g., accuracy, phrasing, steady rate) for the next session
  • Record instructional planning ideas in the “Next Steps” section of the tracker
