Prioritizing Passions: Making Time for What You Love

What truly makes you feel alive?

It's easy to get caught up in school, homework, and other responsibilities.
But what about the things that light you up?

Today, we're going to talk about you and your passions!

Welcome students and start with the warm-up question: "What's one thing you absolutely love to do that makes you feel happy and energized?" Encourage a few students to share their answers. Emphasize that this lesson is about making sure they have time for these important things.

Why Does This Matter?

Balancing life isn't just for grown-ups!

Making time for things you enjoy helps you:

  • Feel happier and less stressed.
  • Stay motivated for school and other tasks.
  • Discover new talents and interests.
  • Have energy for everything you do!

It's all about a balanced life.

Explain why this topic is important for their overall well-being. Connect it to feeling good, having energy, and managing stress.

What Are Your Passions?

Passions are activities that:

  • Bring you joy and excitement.
  • Make you feel relaxed or energized.
  • Help you learn and grow.
  • You genuinely look forward to doing.

Think about what you love to do, learn, or create.

Introduce the idea of identifying passions. Ask students to think broadly – it doesn't have to be a 'hobby.' It could be spending time with pets, listening to music, talking to friends, etc.

Your Passion Inventory

Time to think!

We're going to use our My Passion-Powered Schedule (Journal) to explore what you truly love.

Take a few minutes to brainstorm and write down:

  • What activities make you forget about time?
  • What do you do when you have free time (or wish you had free time)?
  • What makes you feel good about yourself?

Transition to the journal activity. Explain that the journal will help them pinpoint these passions more concretely. Give them instructions for the journal.

Reflection Time

Dive deep into your thoughts and feelings. No right or wrong answers here! Just honest reflection about what makes you tick.

Once you've filled out your journal, we'll talk about how to make sure these passions don't get lost.

Allow students time to work on their journal. Circulate and provide support, prompting them with questions if they struggle to identify passions.

The Scheduling Challenge

It feels like there's never enough time, right?

School, homework, chores, family… the list goes on.

But just like you schedule classes or appointments, you can schedule time for your passions!

Introduce the concept of scheduling 'me time.' Explain that it's not about finding huge blocks, but small, consistent moments.

Small Steps, Big Impact

You don't need hours! Even 15-30 minutes can make a difference.

Think about:

  • Before school
  • During lunch
  • After homework
  • Weekends

These small pockets of time can add up!

Emphasize that even small amounts of time count. Give examples of how to fit things in.

Map Your Moments

Now, let's look at your My Passion-Powered Schedule (Journal) again.

Can you find specific times in your week where you can realistically fit in one of your passions?

  • Example: "Tuesday, 4:30 PM - Read for 20 minutes."
  • Example: "Saturday morning - Draw for 45 minutes."

Guide students to look at their schedule in their journal and find realistic slots. Encourage them to be flexible and creative.

The 'Me Time' Integration

Let's make it real!

Our next activity, The 'Me Time' Integration (Activity), will help you visually plan out when and how you'll make time for your passions.

This is your blueprint for a happier, more balanced you!

Introduce the activity. Explain it's a visual way to plan and commit to their 'me time.'

Your Balanced Blueprint

Use the activity to design your ideal week, incorporating both your responsibilities AND your passions.

This isn't about perfection, but about intention.

Encourage students to be creative and thoughtful in their activity.

Your Well-being Matters!

Remember, taking care of yourself and making time for what you love isn't selfish – it's essential.

You have the power to create a life that feels good and brings you joy.

Keep prioritizing those passions!

Conclude the lesson by reinforcing the main message: prioritizing passions is key to well-being. Ask for one takeaway from each student.

The 'Me Time' Integration: My Balanced Week Visual

Now that you've identified your passions and thought about where they can fit into your week, let's create a visual representation of your balanced schedule!

Objective: To visually plan out your week, making sure to include dedicated "me time" for your passions alongside your responsibilities.

Materials:

Instructions:

  1. Divide Your Week: Draw a large circle or rectangle representing your entire week. Divide it into seven sections for each day (Monday-Sunday). You can also divide each day into morning, afternoon, and evening sections.

  2. Map Your Responsibilities: First, fill in your non-negotiable responsibilities. Use one color to represent things like:

    • School hours
    • Homework time
    • Chores or family duties
    • Any other regular commitments (e.g., sports practice, appointments)
  3. Integrate Your Passions (Me Time!): Now, using a different color, take your planned passion activities from your My Passion-Powered Schedule (Journal) and add them to your weekly visual. Make sure they are clearly marked within the day and time slots you've chosen.

  4. Add Buffer/Flex Time (Optional but Recommended): You might want to use a third color to mark any free or flexible time you have. This shows where you could potentially add more "me time" or handle unexpected tasks.

  5. Add Notes & Reminders: Include small notes or icons for anything that will help you remember and commit to your plan (e.g., "Remember my book!", "Music time!").

  6. Review and Reflect: Look at your completed visual.

    • Does it look balanced? Why or why not?
    • Are you excited about the "me time" you've scheduled?
    • What adjustments might you make to ensure you stick to your plan?

This visual is your personal commitment to a more balanced and joyful week!
