Slide Deck

Plant Power: A Seed's Story

How do tiny seeds become big plants? Let's find out!

Welcome the student and explain that today we're going on an adventure to learn how plants grow.

What Do Plants Need?

Think about it: What makes a plant happy and grow tall?

  • Sunlight ☀️
  • Water 💧
  • Soil 🌱

Ask the student what they think plants need to grow. Guide them to think about sunlight, water, and soil.

A Plant's Amazing Journey

Plants grow and change, just like us! It's called a life cycle.

Introduce the idea of a life cycle. Explain that everything that grows has a life cycle.

Stage 1: The Tiny Seed

It all starts with a little seed, hiding underground. It looks small, but it has big dreams!

Show a picture of a seed. Explain it's like a tiny package of life.

Stage 2: The Sprout Appears!

With water and sunshine, the seed breaks open and a tiny sprout peeks out. "Hello, world!"

Show a picture of a sprout. Explain that with water and warmth, the seed wakes up.

Stage 3: A Young Seedling

The sprout grows into a seedling, with small leaves to catch the sun's energy.

Show a picture of a seedling. Explain it's getting bigger and growing leaves.

Stage 4: A Mature Plant

The seedling grows into a big, strong plant that can make flowers and new seeds!

Show a picture of a mature plant. Explain it's now big and strong and can make its own seeds.

The Plant Life Cycle

Seed -> Sprout -> Seedling -> Mature Plant -> New Seeds!

It's a never-ending circle of life!

Review the stages quickly. Emphasize that it's a cycle, it keeps going.

Let's Plant a Seed!

Now it's our turn to help a plant begin its amazing journey!

Transition to the planting activity. Explain we will plant a seed and watch its journey.

You're a Plant Expert!

You now know the incredible journey of a seed becoming a plant. Keep an eye on your own plant!

Conclude by reiterating the main idea and encouraging observation of their own planted seed.

Teacher Script: Plant Power

Warm-Up: What Do Plants Need? (5 minutes)

"Hello there! Today we're going on an exciting adventure to learn about something truly amazing: how plants grow from tiny seeds into big, beautiful plants! Have you ever thought about what a plant needs to grow? What do you think makes a plant happy?"

(Listen to student responses. Guide them toward sunlight, water, and soil if needed.)

"That's right! Just like us, plants need a few important things to be healthy and grow. We'll explore that more as we go."

Introduction to Plant Life Cycle (10 minutes)

"Let's look at our Plant Power! A Seed's Story Slide Deck! Our first slide asks 'Plant Power: A Seed's Story.' Today, we're going to learn about a plant's entire journey, called a life cycle. It's how a plant starts small and gets bigger and bigger, making new plants along the way."

(Move to 'What Do Plants Need?' slide)

"Let's revisit this! What did we say plants need? Sunlight, water, and soil! Remember these, because they are super important for our seed's story."

(Move to 'A Plant's Amazing Journey' slide)

"Plants grow and change, just like us! It's an amazing journey."

(Present the Plant Life Cycle Cards or show corresponding slides for each stage. Ask questions like: "What do you see happening here?", "What do you think comes next?")

"First, we have the seed! (Show seed card/slide) This tiny seed is like a sleeping baby plant, waiting for the right conditions to wake up. It's usually hidden underground. What do you think it needs to start waking up?"

"Next, with some water and warmth, the seed wakes up and grows a little sprout! (Show sprout card/slide) See that tiny root reaching down and a little green shoot pushing up? It's saying 'Hello, world!'"

"Then, our sprout gets bigger and becomes a seedling! (Show seedling card/slide) It starts to grow small leaves that help it catch sunlight, which is like food for the plant!"

"And finally, the seedling grows into a mature plant! (Show mature plant card/slide) This is a big, strong plant that can make flowers and even new seeds of its own. It's a full-grown plant, ready to create the next generation!"

(Review 'The Plant Life Cycle' slide)

"So, it goes: Seed -> Sprout -> Seedling -> Mature Plant. And then the mature plant makes new seeds, starting the cycle all over again! It's like a circle that keeps going forever!"

Hands-On Planting Activity (10 minutes)

"Now, for the fun part! We're going to plant our very own seed and help it start its amazing journey. (Bring out seed, pot, soil, water.) What do you think this little seed needs to grow into a plant?"

(Guide the student through planting the seed: putting soil in the pot, making a small hole, placing the seed, covering it gently, and watering it. Discuss what they expect to happen next.)

"Great job! We've given our seed a home. Now, what do you think will happen first? What will it need to grow? And how will it change over time? We just talked about the life cycle, so let's think about those stages for our new plant."

Worksheet: My Plant's Journey (3 minutes)

"You've done an excellent job learning about plants today! To remember everything, let's work on this My Plant's Journey Worksheet. You can draw or write about the different stages of the plant life cycle. What comes first? What comes after that?"

(Provide assistance and encouragement as needed. Focus on recalling the key stages.)

Cool-Down: Share Your Learning (2 minutes)

"Wow, you've learned so much about plants today! Can you share one new thing you learned about plants or their life cycle? Or, what are you most excited to watch happen with our seed that we just planted?"

(Praise their participation and learning.)

"Fantastic! Keep observing your seed, and you'll see the plant power in action. Great work today!"
