Plant Detective Plan

Students will identify and label the five main parts of a plant (roots, stem, leaves, flower, fruit) using AAC supports through interactive slides, hands-on matching, and a guided worksheet.

Understanding plant parts builds foundational science vocabulary and observation skills. Using AAC supports ensures access for communication-diverse learners, boosting confidence and reinforcing word–picture associations.

  • Interactive Plant Detective Slides, - Plant Part Matching Cards, - Plant Detective Guided Worksheet, - AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart, and - A real potted plant or high-resolution plant photo

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

  • Print and cut out the Plant Part Matching Cards
  • Print the Plant Detective Guided Worksheet
  • Review the flow of the Interactive Plant Detective Slides
  • Gather a real potted plant or set up a clear plant photograph
  • Place the AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart within student reach for reference

Step 1

Introduction & Slide Exploration

5 minutes

  • Tell the student they are a ‘Plant Detective’ today.
  • Display slide 1 of the Interactive Plant Detective Slides.
  • Prompt the student to notice the plant and use AAC device or chart to say “plant.”
  • Encourage pointing to the whole plant on the slide.

Step 2

Identify Each Plant Part

10 minutes

  • Show one slide per part (roots, stem, leaves, flower, fruit) using the Interactive Plant Detective Slides.
  • On each slide, display the part label, photograph, and corresponding symbol from the AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart.
  • Ask the student to select the symbol and say the word via AAC or point to the chart.
  • Model pronunciation and reinforce correct responses with praise.

Step 3

Hands-On Matching Activity

8 minutes

  • Spread out the Plant Part Matching Cards face up.
  • Invite the student to match each picture card with its word card and symbol from the AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart.
  • Provide prompts as needed (e.g., “Which one is the leaves?”).
  • Confirm matches and correct gently if needed.

Step 4

Guided Worksheet Practice

7 minutes

  • Hand the student the Plant Detective Guided Worksheet.
  • Guide them to label each plant part by drawing a line from the word to the picture.
  • Allow use of the AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart for reference.
  • Provide immediate feedback and celebrate completion.

Let’s learn about the five main parts of a plant.

Welcome the student and introduce today’s mission: “You are a Plant Detective! We will explore a plant and find its parts.” Point to the title and use the AAC device or AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart to say “plant” and “detective.”

Meet the Plant

Show the whole plant image. Ask: “What is this?” Encourage the student to use their AAC device or point to the “plant” symbol on the AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart. Provide praise: “Great job saying ‘plant’!”

Roots

Display the roots image. Ask: “Where are the roots?” Guide the student to point to or select the roots symbol on the AAC Symbol Plant Parts Chart and say “roots.” Model pronunciation and reinforce: “Yes, those are the roots!”

Plant Parts Detective

  4. Continue until all sets are matched.
  5. Provide praise and corrective feedback as needed.
