Photosynthesis Proficiency Rubric
Learning Target: I can construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into and out of organisms.
Level 4: Exceeds Expectations
Complex Content: I can design and interpret experiments that investigate factors affecting photosynthesis and its impact on ecosystem matter and energy flow, predicting and justifying outcomes with scientific reasoning and evidence.
Level 3: Meets Expectations (Proficient)
Standard (.LS1.6): I can construct a clear and comprehensive scientific explanation, supported by strong evidence, for the essential role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter (e.g., carbon dioxide and oxygen) and the flow of energy into and out of organisms within an ecosystem. My explanation accurately describes the inputs, outputs, and significance of photosynthesis.
Level 2: Developing Proficiency
Learning Target Progression & Academic Vocabulary:
- I can identify the key components and basic process of photosynthesis (inputs: sunlight, water, carbon dioxide; outputs: glucose, oxygen).
- I can define and correctly use academic vocabulary such as: photosynthesis, chlorophyll, chloroplast, glucose, carbon dioxide, oxygen, producer, consumer, matter cycling, and energy flow.
- I can describe, in simple terms, how photosynthesis is a step in the cycling of matter and the flow of energy in an ecosystem.
Level 1: Beginning Proficiency
I can identify some basic facts about plants or energy, but I struggle to connect them to the process of photosynthesis or its role in matter and energy cycling. My vocabulary use is limited or incorrect.
