30 Minutes

Approach

Keeping your hands to yourself

Materials

Hula hoops (one per student), Discussion Questions, Role-Playing Scenarios, and Game Rules for Bubble Tag

Step 1

Introduction to Personal Space

5 mins

  • Introduce the concept of personal space to the students.
  • Explain that personal space is the physical area around each person that should not be entered without permission.
  • Discuss why respecting personal space is important for everyone’s comfort and safety.

Step 2

Personal Space Bubbles Activity

10 mins

  • Give each student a hula hoop and ask them to stand inside it. The hula hoop represents their personal space bubble.
  • Instruct students to walk around the room with their hula hoop, making sure not to touch anyone else’s bubble.
  • Discuss how it feels to have their own space and how they can respect others’ space.

Step 3

Role-Playing Scenarios

5 mins

  • Present different scenarios where students need to decide how to respect personal space. For example:
    • Asking to join a game
    • Standing in line
    • Working in groups
  • Have students role-play the scenarios while keeping their hula hoops on the ground to remind them of their personal space.

Step 4

Game of Bubble Tag

5 mins

  • Explain the rules of Bubble Tag: one student is 'It' and tries to tag others without touching their hula hoops. If tagged, they freeze in place.
  • Play the game, rotating the 'It' person after each round to give more students a turn.

Step 5

Discussion and Closure

5 mins

  • Gather the students and discuss what they learned about personal space.
  • Ask questions like: How did it feel to have your own space? Why is it important to respect others’ space?
  • Summarize the key points of the lesson and encourage students to practice keeping their hands to themselves.
