Welcome to Peaceful Paths!

What is a Conflict?

Sometimes, friends or classmates don't agree. This is called a conflict.

It's a normal part of life! But how we handle it matters.

Today, we'll learn ways to find peaceful paths to solve problems!

Welcome students and introduce the topic of conflict. Ask them what 'conflict' means to them. Emphasize that it's okay to have disagreements, but it's important how we handle them.

Strategy 1: Stop, Breathe, Think

When things get heated, what should you do?

  1. STOP: Take a moment.
  2. BREATHE: Take a deep breath.
  3. THINK: What's the best way to handle this?

This helps you calm down and choose your words wisely!

Introduce the first strategy: Stop, Breathe, Think. Explain that pausing helps us calm down before reacting. Ask for examples of when this might be useful.

Strategy 2: Use "I" Statements

Speak for yourself, not at others!

Instead of saying:

  • "You always take my ball!"

Try saying:

  • "I feel sad when my ball is taken without asking, because I want to play with it."

This helps others understand how you feel.

Introduce 'I' Statements. Explain the difference between blaming ('You always...') and expressing feelings ('I feel...'). Give a simple example: "You made me mad!" vs. "I feel frustrated when...".

Strategy 3: Find Common Ground

Look for a win-win!

Can you find a solution that works for everyone?

  • Maybe you can take turns?
  • Maybe you can combine ideas?
  • Maybe you can find a completely new solution?

The goal is for everyone to feel heard and respected.

Introduce finding common ground. Explain that a good solution makes everyone feel a little bit happy, not just one person winning. Ask for ideas on how to find common ground.

Let's Choose Peaceful Paths!

Remember our strategies:

  1. Stop, Breathe, Think!
  2. Use "I" Statements!
  3. Find Common Ground!

These tools will help you resolve conflicts and build stronger relationships.

Practice makes perfect!

Review the strategies and encourage students to use them. Emphasize that practice makes perfect. Congratulate them on learning these important skills.
