Activity

Talking Stick Practice

Time: 5 minutes
Materials: Patience Talking Stick

Objective

Children will practice waiting patiently for their turn to speak and learn respectful listening.

Instructions

  1. Gather in a circle
    • Have the children sit cross-legged so everyone can see each other.
  2. Introduce the Talking Stick
    • Show the Patience Talking Stick and explain: “Only the person holding the stick may speak. When you’re done, you pass it quietly to your friend.”
  3. Model the activity
    • Teacher holds the stick, says a simple sentence (e.g., “I like apples.”), then demonstrates passing it to the child on the right.
  4. Child practice
    • Invite each child to hold the stick, share one thing they like (a food, toy, or game), and then pass the stick.
    • Encourage children waiting to look at the speaker and listen quietly.
  5. Reinforce patience and listening
    • After each turn, praise the speaker (“Great sharing!”) and the listeners (“Thank you for waiting quietly!”).

Tips for Success

  • Keep turns very short (1–2 sentences).
