In this lesson, 6th to 8th graders will explore important habits for success in school and beyond. Using a game-based learning approach, students will watch a video about staying motivated, participate in an engaging game to reinforce these concepts, and complete an exit ticket. This lesson aims to equip students with essential skills for academic and career success, such as motivation, responsibility, and effective communication.

Step 1

Introduction

2 minutes

  • Welcome the students and introduce the topic: college and career readiness.
  • Briefly explain that developing good habits now can help them succeed in the future.
  • Tell students they will watch an engaging video to learn more about staying motivated.

Step 2

Video Viewing

5 minutes 48 seconds

  • Play the video: How to Stay Motivated
  • Encourage students to pay attention to the different aspects of motivation mentioned in the video.

Step 3

Game Activity

18 minutes

  • Divide the students into small groups.
  • Hand out the printable game cards to each group.
  • Explain the game rules: Each card contains a scenario related to good student habits. Students take turns drawing cards, reading the scenarios aloud, and discussing the importance of each habit and how it relates to motivation.
  • Monitor the groups and provide guidance as needed.
  • After the game, ask each group to share one key takeaway from their discussion.

Step 4

Exit Ticket

4 minutes

  • Distribute the exit tickets to students.
  • Instruct students to answer the questions based on what they learned from the video and the game activity.
  • Collect the exit tickets as students leave the classroom to assess their understanding.
