Parenting 101

Roles, Responsibilities, and Healthy Communication

Welcome students to the lesson. Introduce yourself and state the topic: Parenting 101. Briefly explain that today they’ll learn about roles, responsibilities, and communication strategies parents use.

Lesson Objectives

  • Explore key parenting roles
  • Identify parental responsibilities
  • Practice healthy communication strategies

Display the objectives. Read each objective aloud and ensure students understand the goals for today’s session.

What Is Parenting?

Parenting involves:

  • Caregiving: Providing food, shelter, and safety
  • Teaching: Imparting knowledge, values, and life skills
  • Mentoring: Guiding emotional and social growth

Ask students: “What comes to mind when you hear ‘parenting’?” Capture quick responses. Then define each role below, giving examples.

Parental Responsibilities

  • Emotional Support: Active listening, empathy, encouragement
  • Physical Care: Nutrition, hygiene, health, safety
  • Social Guidance: Manners, decision-making, relationship skills

Brainstorm additional responsibilities on the whiteboard. Categorize student ideas under emotional, physical, and social support.

Healthy Communication Techniques

  1. Active Listening: Focus fully; reflect feelings back
  2. Empathy: Acknowledge emotions without judgment
  3. Clear Instructions: Use simple, specific language

Introduce each technique one at a time. Model a short dialogue for active listening, empathy, and clear instructions.

Pair Practice

In pairs, role-play this scenario:
A teen is upset about a curfew. One is the parent, one the teen.
Choose one technique:

  • Active Listening
  • Empathy
  • Clear Instructions

Explain the pair role-play. Encourage students to try at least one technique. Provide feedback as you circulate.

Scenario Activity

  1. Form groups of 3–4
  2. Take a Parenting Scenario Card
  3. Discuss:
    • Which parenting roles apply?
    • Which responsibilities matter most?
    • Which communication strategies will you use?
  4. Select one scenario to share your approach

Explain group work. Distribute scenario cards. Remind groups to link roles, responsibilities, and communication strategies in their discussion.

Reflection

On your sheet, answer:

  • What’s one new thing you learned today?
  • How could you apply these skills in real life?

Hand out the reflection worksheet. Give students 2 minutes to complete it. Play soft music if possible to create a reflective atmosphere.

Wrap-Up

  • Volunteers: Share a key takeaway
  • Thank you for your insights and effort!

Invite a few volunteers to share one key takeaway. Thank students for their participation and wrap up the lesson.

Activity

Parenting Scenario Cards

Divide students into small groups and distribute one scenario card per group. Ask groups to discuss the questions for each scenario:

• Which parenting role(s) apply? (caregiver, teacher, mentor)
• Which responsibilities matter most? (emotional, physical, social)
• Which communication strategy or strategies would you use? (active listening, empathy, clear instructions)

Scenario 1: Curfew Conflict

Your teenage child arrives home 45 minutes past curfew and immediately retreats to their room without explanation. They’ve broken a clear household rule.

Scenario 2: Homework Struggle

Your 14-year-old has missed several homework deadlines and seems frustrated by math. They ask to skip practice to “just chill” instead of tackling assignments.

Scenario 3: Sibling Rivalry

Two younger siblings are constantly arguing over shared space and belongings. They’ve yelled at each other twice today and refuse to compromise.

Scenario 4: Social Media Drama

Your child comes to you upset: a friend posted an embarrassing photo of them online. They want you to call the friend’s parents or delete the post.

Scenario 5: New Hobby Refusal

You encouraged your child to try piano lessons. After two months, they say it’s “boring” and want to quit, even though they never practiced at home.

Scenario 6: Stranger Anxiety

Your 10-year-old is anxious about meeting a new coach at sports camp. They feel shy and worry about fitting in with older kids.

Discussion Prompts

  1. Identify a helpful way to communicate in this situation.

  2. What is one responsibility you’d prioritize and why?

  3. How can you show empathy or active listening here?

  4. What might be a clear instruction or boundary to set?
