Our School, Our Cultures
Students will collaboratively research, plan, and present cultural traditions present within their school community, developing cultural awareness, research, and presentation skills.
Understanding different cultures and traditions within our own school broadens our worldview, promotes empathy, and teaches us about the diverse human experiences right here among us. This project also enhances teamwork and creative expression.

Prep
Teacher Preparation
60 minutes
- Review all generated materials: Our School, Our Cultures Lesson Plan, Our School, Our Cultures Slide Deck, Project Guide: Our School, Our Cultures, and Research Worksheet: My Culture/Tradition.
- Prepare digital or physical display space for student work.
- Gather art supplies and ensure access to research resources.
- Optional: Coordinate with art and music teachers for support (as per original template).
Step 1
Week 1: Theme Introduction & Culture/Tradition Selection
45 minutes
- Introduction (10 min): Use Our School, Our Cultures Slide Deck slides 1-3 to introduce the theme 'Our School, Our Cultures'. Discuss what culture and traditions are and why they are important to our school community.
- Brainstorm & Assign Cultures/Traditions (15 min): Facilitate a class brainstorm of different cultures or traditions represented within the school or students' families. Allow students to vote on or assign 4-5 unique cultures/traditions to be the focus for different groups. Group students (3-4 per group) and assign each group a culture/tradition to research (e.g., family traditions, cultural holidays celebrated by classmates, etc.).
- Introduce Project & Research (20 min): Distribute and review the Project Guide: Our School, Our Cultures and Research Worksheet: My Culture/Tradition. Explain the month-long project and the role of the stations. Students begin initial brainstorming within their groups.
Step 2
Week 2: Research & Station Planning
45 minutes
- Check-in & Guided Research (15 min): Review progress on the Research Worksheet: My Culture/Tradition. Provide time for groups to research their assigned culture/tradition, focusing on key aspects like customs, food, music, clothing, and activities. Guide them in using reliable sources and interviewing family members or school community members (with permission).
- Station Action Plan (20 min): Using the Project Guide: Our School, Our Cultures, each group will begin drafting an action plan for their station. This includes deciding on the specific focus (e.g., food, games, history), what they will display, and how they will engage visitors.
- Visuals Brainstorm (10 min): Groups brainstorm ideas for visuals and decorations for their station/classroom. Encourage creativity and cultural authenticity related to their chosen culture/tradition.
Step 3
Week 3: Visuals & Presentation Preparation
45 minutes
- Create Visuals (25 min): Students work on creating visuals for their stations based on their action plans. This could include posters, drawings, decorative elements, or simple props. Provide art supplies and guidance.
- Presentation Outline (15 min): Groups begin outlining their presentation for the Cultural Showcase, focusing on key facts and interesting aspects of their chosen culture/tradition. Emphasize clarity and engagement.
- Teacher Check-in (5 min): Circulate and provide feedback to groups on their visuals and presentation outlines.
Step 4
Week 4: Rehearsal & Final Setup
45 minutes
- Rehearse Presentations (20 min): Each group rehearses their station presentation. Provide constructive feedback on speaking, movement, and overall clarity. Encourage groups to practice engaging their audience.
- Station Setup & Review (20 min): Students arrange their decorations and artifacts for their station. Conduct a final review of all elements, ensuring they are ready for the 'Our School Cultural Showcase'.
- Practice Greetings (5 min): As a class, practice greetings in different languages or traditional ways related to the cultures/traditions being showcased. This builds excitement for the upcoming showcase.

Project Guide: Our School, Our Cultures
Project Goal
Welcome, Cultural Explorers! This month, your mission is to become an expert on a specific culture or tradition found within our school community. You will work in a group to research, plan, and create an engaging station to teach your classmates about your chosen culture/tradition during our grand "Our School Cultural Showcase"!
Your Cultural Station
Your group will design and set up a station that brings your assigned culture or tradition to life! Think about what you would want to see, hear, taste, and do if you were learning about a new culture. Your station should include:
- Information Display (Poster/Presentation): A visually appealing poster or short presentation (using pictures, drawings, and key facts) that introduces your chosen culture/tradition. It should cover its history, meaning, and importance within our school community or in general.
- Cultural Elements: Showcase at least three cultural aspects of your chosen culture/tradition. This could include:
- Food: (Optional, with teacher permission) Small samples of traditional food, or pictures and descriptions of famous dishes.
- Music/Dance: A short playlist of traditional music, or a simple demonstration of a traditional dance/movement.
- Clothing: Pictures or drawings of traditional attire, or even a simple prop.
- Activities/Games: A simple, interactive activity or game related to your chosen culture/tradition that classmates can try (e.g., a mini-craft, a simple riddle, a traditional greeting, a simple game).
- Decorations: Your station should be decorated to reflect the colors, symbols, and atmosphere of your chosen culture/tradition.
Weekly Timeline & Tasks
Week 1: Introduction & Culture/Tradition Selection
- Understand the Theme: Discuss what culture and traditions are and why they are important to our school community.
- Group Up: Join your assigned cultural group.
- Get Your Culture/Tradition: Receive your group's assigned culture or tradition (e.g., family traditions, cultural holidays celebrated by classmates).
- Initial Brainstorm: As a group, discuss what you already know about your culture/tradition and what you're curious to learn. Start filling out your Research Worksheet: My Culture/Tradition.
Week 2: Research & Station Planning
- Deep Dive Research: Use your Research Worksheet: My Culture/Tradition to research your chosen culture/tradition. Focus on its history, customs, food, music, clothing, and unique activities. Assign research tasks to each group member. Consider interviewing family members or school community members (with permission) who are part of this culture/tradition.
- Station Action Plan: Start planning your station! Decide on:
- What information will be on your poster/presentation?
- Which cultural elements will you showcase (food, music, activity, clothing)?
- What decorations will you need?
- Who will do what tasks?
Week 3: Create Visuals & Presentation Outline
- Visual Creation: Begin making your posters, drawings, and other decorations for your station. Work together to make your station visually exciting!
- Presentation Outline: Start outlining what each group member will say or demonstrate during your station presentation. Keep it concise and engaging – remember, you're teaching your classmates!
- Gather Materials: Make a list of any materials you need to bring from home (with parent permission, like food samples or simple props).
Week 4: Rehearsal & Final Preparations
- Presentation Rehearsal: Practice your group's presentation several times. Make sure everyone knows their part and speaks clearly. Practice engaging your audience!
- Station Setup: Bring in all your prepared materials and decorations. Set up your station to be ready for the "Our School Cultural Showcase"!
- Final Touches: Add any last-minute details. Make sure your station is neat, informative, and inviting.
Roles (Suggested, groups can adapt)
- Lead Researcher(s): Gathers information and helps guide the research process.
- Visual Designer(s): Focuses on creating posters, drawings, and decorations.
