This lesson provides a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their personal growth and the positive impact of their peers throughout their time together. It reinforces concepts of friendship and kindness, leaving them with a sense of accomplishment and positive memories.

Audience

5th Grade

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Through guided reflection, sharing, and a celebratory activity.

Materials

Celebration Slideshow, "I've Grown!" Reflection Sheet, and Certificate of Awesome

Prep

Preparation

15 minutes

  • Review the Celebration Slideshow to ensure all content is appropriate and ready.
    - Print enough copies of the "I've Grown!" Reflection Sheet for each student.
    - Prepare a Certificate of Awesome for each student, pre-filling their names if possible.
    - Arrange the classroom for a celebratory and reflective atmosphere (e.g., comfortable seating, optional music).
    - Gather pens/pencils for the reflection activity.
    - Ensure projector/screen is working for the slideshow.

Step 1

Festive Welcome & Check-In

5 minutes

  • Greet students warmly as they enter, playing upbeat, celebratory music.
    - "Welcome, amazing 5th graders! Today is a special day where we celebrate YOU and all the wonderful growth you've experienced. Let's start with a quick check-in: Share one word that describes how you're feeling about our time together." (e.g., happy, reflective, excited, proud).

Step 2

"Remember When..." Group Reflection

10 minutes

  • Display the first slide of the Celebration Slideshow.
    - Distribute the "I've Grown!" Reflection Sheet.
    - "Now, let's take a moment to reflect. Think back to when we first started our group. What was something you found challenging? What's one thing you're proud of learning about yourself or about working with others? Take about 5 minutes to write down your thoughts on your reflection sheet."
    - Facilitate a brief sharing session: "Who would like to share one thing they wrote down about their growth or a positive memory from our time together?" (Encourage a few students to share).

Step 3

Kindness Compliment Circle

8 minutes

  • Transition to the next slide of the Celebration Slideshow.
    - "We've all grown, and we've also seen amazing things in our friends. Let's do a 'Kindness Compliment Circle.' Everyone will get a chance to share one positive thing they noticed about a peer in our group. It could be something kind they did, how they helped you, or a talent you admire. Let's go around the circle. You'll say, 'I appreciate [Name] because...'" (Model an example first).

Step 4

Certificate Ceremony

5 minutes

  • Display the next slide of the Celebration Slideshow.
    - "You've all been truly awesome! To acknowledge your hard work, growth, and wonderful contributions, I have a special Certificate of Awesome for each of you."
    - Call students up one by one to receive their certificate. Offer a brief, genuine compliment to each student as they come up.

Step 5

Group Celebration Closing

2 minutes

  • Display the final slide of the Celebration Slideshow.
    - "Before we officially close, let's all give ourselves a big round of applause for a fantastic journey! Remember the lessons we've learned, the friendships we've built, and how much you've all grown. Keep shining bright!"
    - Play a final celebratory song as students gather their belongings.
