Desk Rescue Mission Activity

  • In pairs, students spend 5 minutes picking one messy area and applying the 3-step visual method.
  • After 5 minutes, pairs share what they prioritized and why.

Welcome everyone! Today we’ll learn a simple, three-step process to take any messy workspace and turn it into a clear, organized area. We’ll walk through each step with visuals and examples.

Step 1: Identify the Mess

  1. Look around your workspace.
  2. Spot items that are misplaced or cluttered.
  3. Circle or mark each messy area before moving anything.

Explain that ‘Identify’ means noticing everything that’s out of place. Show a messy desk photo and point out papers, pencils, books, etc. Then demonstrate circling or highlighting problem areas.

Step 2: List Your Tasks

  1. Write down every item or task you see.
  2. Use simple words: e.g., “Put away books,” “Throw away scrap paper.”
  3. Keep the list visible so you don’t forget any items.

Demonstrate creating a quick list: one line per item or task. Encourage short, clear phrases. Show a sample list on screen.

Step 3: Prioritize Quickly

  1. Review your list and choose 2–3 high-impact tasks.
  2. Rank them by importance (①, ②, ③).
  3. Start with the highest-ranked task for fastest results.

Talk through how to pick the top 2–3 tasks that will have the biggest impact on clarity. Explain using stars or numbering to rank tasks.

Objective: Students will apply the three‐step Chaos to Clarity method to a real desk or workspace area in pairs, practicing quick organization.

Materials:

  1. Select Messy Area (1 minute)
    • In pairs, choose one student’s desk or workspace to organize.
  2. Identify the Mess (2 minutes)
  3. List Your Tasks (2 minutes)
    • Write down each task needed to clear the area (e.g., “Put away books,” “Sort loose papers”).
  4. Prioritize Quickly (1 minute)
    • Review the list and label the top two tasks with ① (highest impact) and ② (second-highest).
  5. Clean-Up Focus (3 minutes)
    • Work together to complete your top two tasks.
  6. Team Debrief (1 minute)
    • Share with the class which tasks you prioritized and why. Discuss how focusing on these tasks changed your workspace.
