- First full team to correctly match all cards wins bonus points toward badges.
- Differentiation: Adjust race rules (e.g., slower pacing or visual cues) for accessibility.
Step 5
Quest Reflection & Cool-Down
8 minutes
- Hand out Quest Reflection Journal.
- Prompt students to write: “What was your biggest takeaway? How will you use this skill at home?”

Step 6
Wrap-Up & Badge Ceremony
2 minutes
- Announce teams’ badge earnings based on points from challenges and race.
- Distribute physical badges or stickers to each student.
- Reinforce key takeaway: “Now you’re label-reading experts!”

Nutrition Quest Map
An adventurous journey to decode fats, sugars, and proteins on food labels.
• Audience: 6th Grade
• Duration: 50 minutes
• Tier: MTSS Tier 1 (Classroom)
Welcome students to the Nutrition Quest! Introduce yourself as the Quest Master and build excitement. Explain that today’s adventure will teach them how to read food labels and earn badges.
Learning Objectives
By the end of our quest, you will be able to:
- Identify fats, sugars, and proteins on food labels
- Explain why each nutrient matters for your health
- Collaborate in teams to earn nutrient badges
Read each objective aloud and ask a volunteer to restate in their own words. Reinforce that these goals guide the quest.
Your Quest Map
Follow the path through four stations:
- Fat Fortress (Red Station)
- Sugar Summit (Pink Station)
- Protein Peak (Dark Red Station)
- Reflection Retreat
Rotate in order and track progress on your map.
Display the quest map graphic. Explain each station (color-coded) and how teams will rotate every 10–12 minutes.
Station Challenges Overview
Station 1: Fat Fortress
• Identify and calculate total fats
Station 2: Sugar Summit
• Spot added vs. natural sugars
Station 3: Protein Peak
• Compare protein per serving
Station 4: Reflection Retreat
• Journal your biggest takeaway
Briefly summarize each station challenge. Point out where they will find the Badge-Earning Challenges sheets.
Earn Your Badges
• Fat Badge: Complete 5 fat-related challenges correctly
• Sugar Badge: Score full points on sugar puzzles
• Protein Badge: Unlock protein extension questions
Bonus Points: Win the Label Relay Race to earn double badges!
Explain how teams earn badges: one badge per correct chart, bonus for 100% accuracy, extra for top performers.
Label Relay Race Rules
- Line up behind start line with your team
- On “Go,” first runner grabs one nutrient card
- Match it to the correct food label sample
- Tag the next teammate to continue
- First team to finish correctly wins bonus points
Go over the relay race rules step-by-step. Demonstrate matching a nutrient card to a label sample.
Quest Reflection & Cool-Down
In your journal, answer:
- What was your biggest takeaway?
- How will you use label-reading skills at home?
Share one insight with your partner.
Distribute the Quest Reflection Journal here and model writing a response to the prompt.
Badge Ceremony & Takeaway
Congratulations, label-reading experts!
• Teams earn badges based on challenge points + relay bonus
• Wear your badges proudly

Activity
Badge-Earning Challenges
At each nutrient station, work through the five challenge questions below. Use the sample food labels provided at your station (Label A, B, or C). Record your answers in the spaces below.
Fat Fortress Challenges (Red Station)
- Locate the Total Fat amount per serving on Sample Label A. Write it here:
- How many grams of Saturated Fat per serving does Sample Label A contain? _______________
- What % Daily Value for Total Fat is listed on Label A? _______________
- Compare Sample Label A and Sample Label B:
- Which label shows less total fat? _______________
- Explain why that might be healthier: _________________________________________________________________
- Extension: In one sentence, explain why moderating saturated fat intake is important for your overall health.
Sugar Summit Challenges (Pink Station)
- On Sample Label B, find the Total Sugars per serving. _______________
- How many grams of Added Sugars does Label B list? _______________
- Calculate the difference between natural sugars and added sugars on Label B. Show your work:
Natural Sugars = ________ g, Added Sugars = ________ g, Difference = ________ g
- Which product (Label B or Label C) has a higher amount of added sugar? _______________
- Why might that matter when choosing snacks? __________________________________________________
- Extension: List two tips for reducing added sugar in your daily diet.
Protein Peak Challenges (Dark Red Station)
- On Sample Label C, find the Protein per serving. _______________
- How many calories come from protein if each gram of protein has 4 calories? Show your calculation:
- Protein grams = ________ g × 4 calories/g = ________ calories
- What % Daily Value for protein is listed on Label C? _______________
- Compare the protein on Label C to Label A. Which product offers more protein per serving? _______________
- Explain one benefit of eating higher-protein foods:
- Extension: Describe a balanced snack that combines protein with a fruit or vegetable. Why is this a good choice?
Game
Label Relay Race
Objective:
Teams race to match nutrient cards with the correct food label samples, reinforcing label-reading speed and accuracy.
Materials:
- 1 set of 10 Nutrient Cards (printed, cut)
- 1 set of 10 Label Sample Cards (printed, cut)
- Masking tape or cones to mark start/finish line
- Team bins or baskets for matched pairs
- Timer or stopwatch
Setup (5 minutes):
- Use tape or cones to mark a start line and a label table about 15 feet away.
- Place Nutrient Cards face down in a stack at the start line.
- Spread Label Sample Cards face up on the label table in random order.
- Divide students into equal teams (3–4 per team) and have them line up behind the start line.
Game Play (10 minutes):
- On “Go,” the first runner from each team flips over the top Nutrient Card.
- Runner races to the label table, finds the matching Label Sample Card that shows that nutrient value, and places the pair in their team bin.
- Runner returns to start line and tags the next teammate.
- Continue until all 10 pairs are matched.
- Check matches for accuracy. The first team to correctly match all pairs wins bonus points toward badges.
