Time

55 minutes

Approach

Immersive SF scenarios, group work, and interactive activities.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

Step 1

Intro & Scenario Launch

5 minutes

  • Welcome students and set group norms (listening, turn-taking, respect).
  • Present a brief sci-fi scenario: "It's 2050, humanity has colonized Mars and AI runs smart cities."
  • Explain objectives: explore industries, design a job, debate tech impacts, and list required skills.

Step 2

Explore Future Industries

10 minutes

  • Divide into four groups; assign each an industry from the Future Industry Overviews:
    • Space Tourism
    • Biofabrication
    • Virtual Environment Design
    • Renewable Energy Innovation
  • Groups review slides and identify one key job role in their sector.
  • Support students with graphic organizers and pairing as needed.

Step 3

Design Your 2050 Job

15 minutes

  • Distribute Design Your Job in 2050 sheets.
  • Students individually or in pairs sketch their ideal future job, noting:
    • Job title and description
    • Daily tasks and work environment
    • Technologies or tools used
  • Circulate to prompt details, offer sentence starters, and check comprehension.

Step 4

Tech Impact Debate

15 minutes

  • Introduce the debate question: “Will AI enhance or replace human jobs in 2050?”
  • Split each group into two mini-teams: Pro-AI enhancement vs. AI replacement.
  • Use the Tech Impact Debate prompt sheet to:
    • List 2 arguments per side
    • Prepare one example scenario
  • Facilitate a timed debate, encouraging respectful turn-taking and offering visuals to support speaking.

Step 5

Skills Inventory & Reflection

10 minutes

  • Hand out the Emerging Skills Inventory.
  • Students check off skills they think are critical for their designed job (e.g., creativity, adaptability, tech literacy).
  • Pair-share: each student names one new skill they want to develop.
  • Conclude by summarizing how these skills link to real-world career planning.

Slide Deck

Future Industry Overviews

Explore four exciting sectors shaping jobs in 2050.

Welcome students and introduce the purpose of this mini–deck. Explain they will explore four cutting-edge industries and identify jobs in each. Encourage note-taking or sketching.

How to Use This Deck

• In groups, review slides.
• Discuss the industry highlights.
• Choose one key job role to explore further.
• Note technologies, daily tasks, and skills required.

Explain how to work in small groups: each group reviews all slides, picks one industry to focus on, then identifies a key job role. Remind them to look for technologies and skills mentioned.

Space Tourism

• Commercial orbital flights and lunar vacations
• Private space hotels and cruise-ship style habitats
• Interplanetary travel tours (Mars, Moon, asteroids)

Introduce Space Tourism: getting people to and around space. Show a picture of a space hotel or rocket.

Space Tourism: Key Jobs

• Space Tour Guide: lead visitors on zero-gravity tours
• Zero-G Flight Engineer: operate and maintain spacecraft
• Habitat Designer: plan living quarters in orbit or on planets

Highlight some possible careers. Prompt students to imagine daily tasks and environments for each role.

Biofabrication

• 3D printing of human tissues and organs
• Lab-grown meats, dairy, and sustainable biomaterials
• Synthetic skin, cartilage, and eco-friendly plastics

Explain biofabrication: using biology and engineering to create materials and food. Show an image of a bioprinter or lab dish.

Biofabrication: Key Jobs

• Tissue Engineer: design and grow biological structures
• Bioprint Technician: operate bio-3D printers
• Food Cultivation Specialist: oversee lab-grown food production

Discuss how these jobs blend science and creativity. Encourage students to think of other possibilities.

Virtual Environment Design

• Immersive VR workspaces and classrooms
• Training simulators for medicine, industry, and defense
• Shared virtual social and entertainment platforms

Introduce virtual environment design: creating digital worlds for work, play, and learning. Show a VR headset icon.

Virtual Environment Design: Key Jobs

• VR Architect: plan and build virtual spaces
• Simulation Developer: code interactive scenarios
• UX Designer for Virtual Spaces: ensure user comfort and accessibility

Emphasize the blend of art, coding, and user experience. Ask students what environments they’d create.

Renewable Energy Innovation

• Next-gen solar arrays and wind turbines
• Experimental fusion reactors and hydrogen fuel
• Advanced energy storage (batteries, supercapacitors)

Explain renewable energy innovation: creating clean power solutions. Show solar panel or wind turbine image.

Renewable Energy Innovation: Key Jobs

• Fusion Technician: maintain and monitor fusion reactors
• Battery Systems Engineer: design high-capacity storage
• Smart Grid Analyst: optimize energy distribution networks

Highlight the societal impact of these roles. Invite students to consider teamwork and communication skills needed.

Objective

Students will discuss and debate the question: “Will AI enhance or replace human jobs in 2050?”

Guidelines

  • Take turns speaking and listen to each other.
  • Speak respectfully and use positive language.
  • Support your ideas with examples or reasons.
  • Use the sentence starters provided to help form your arguments.

Steps

1. Pick Your Side (2 minutes)

  • Team A – AI Enhances Human Jobs
  • Team B – AI Replaces Human Jobs

2. Brainstorm Arguments (5 minutes)

Each mini-team writes 2 arguments for their side. Use these sentence starters:

Team A – AI Enhances:

  • “AI will help human workers by…

  • “With AI support, people can be more…

Team B – AI Replaces:

  • “AI might take over tasks like…

  • “Humans could lose jobs such as…

3. Create an Example Scenario (3 minutes)

Describe a short scenario showing your side in action. Include:

  • Job role (e.g., “AI-assisted doctor”)
  • Key change (enhanced or replaced)

Example:
“By 2050, nurses work alongside AI robots that monitor patients’ vital signs every second. This lets nurses spend more time talking and comforting patients.”

Space for your scenario:

4. Conduct the Debate (5 minutes)

  • Team A presents their 2 arguments (1 minute).
  • Team B presents their 2 arguments (1 minute).
