Once upon a time, in a magical land, there lived two friends, Max and Mia. They loved exploring their village, but today, they encountered a challenge! They needed to collect exactly 11 apples, but they only had groups of apples that were near doubles. Max had 6 apples, and Mia had 5. How many apples do they have in total?

Max and Mia were stumped but remembered their teacher's lesson on near doubles! They added 6 + 6 and got 12 but knew they had too many. So, they subtracted 1 and found the answer was 11! They continued their adventure, solving more near double problems until they collected all the apples they needed.
