My School Year Colors

Students will express their personal identity, describe their backpack, list favorite subjects, and articulate goals for the school year.

This lesson helps students transition back to school by encouraging self-reflection and sharing in a low-pressure, creative way. It fosters a sense of community and allows teachers to get to know their students better.

Creative writing and coloring activity.

Materials

Small group students, Crayons or colored pencils, and Back to School Coloring Page

Prep

Prepare Materials

10 minutes

Step 1

Introduction & Warm-Up (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Greet students and welcome them back to school.
    - Introduce the activity using the Introduction Slide.
    - Explain that today's activity is a fun way to share a bit about themselves and their hopes for the new school year.

Step 2

Distribute Coloring Page (2 minutes)

2 minutes

  • Distribute the Back to School Coloring Page and art supplies to each student.
    - Briefly review each section of the coloring page: 'About Me,' 'My Backpack,' 'Favorite Subjects,' and 'My Goals.'

Step 3

Independent Work & Coloring (15 minutes)

15 minutes

  • Instruct students to complete the writing sections and begin coloring their pages.
    - Encourage them to be creative and express themselves through their writing and art.
    - Circulate around the room to offer support and answer any questions.

Step 4

Group Sharing & Cool Down (8 minutes)

8 minutes

  • Invite students to share one or two things from their completed coloring page with their small group or the whole class, if time permits and they feel comfortable.
    - Use the Wrap-Up Slide to facilitate a brief discussion about what they're looking forward to most this year.
    - Collect the completed coloring pages.
