What Are Feelings?

We all have feelings!

Feelings are emotions we experience every day.

They can change often, just like the weather!

Learning about feelings helps us understand ourselves and others better.

Let's explore some common feelings and what they look like!

Welcome students and introduce the topic of feelings. Ask them to think about different feelings they know. This slide sets the stage for discussing emotions.

Happy & Sad

Happy!

  • What it looks like: A big smile, bright eyes, maybe a giggle!
  • When we feel it: When we play, get a treat, or see a friend.

Sad...

  • What it looks like: A frown, droopy eyes, maybe tears.
  • When we feel it: When we miss someone, or something doesn't go our way.

Introduce 'Happy' and 'Sad.' Ask students to show happy and sad faces. Discuss when they might feel these emotions and what their bodies might do.

Angry & Surprised

Angry!

  • What it looks like: Frowning, tight lips, maybe crossed arms.
  • When we feel it: When something is unfair, or we get frustrated.

Surprised!

  • What it looks like: Wide eyes, open mouth, eyebrows raised!
  • When we feel it: When something unexpected happens, like a sudden noise or a present.

Introduce 'Angry' and 'Surprised.' Emphasize that it's okay to feel angry, but it's important to learn how to express it safely. Discuss what makes them surprised.

Scared

Scared!

  • What it looks like: Wide eyes, maybe a gasp, wanting to hide.
  • When we feel it: When we hear a loud noise, or see something new and unknown.

It's okay to feel scared sometimes. We can talk about our fears.

Introduce 'Scared.' Discuss what makes them feel scared and how their bodies react. Reassure them that it's normal to feel scared sometimes and that we can talk about it.
