Lesson Plan
My Learning Journey
Students will be able to define 'progress' and 'monitoring' in simple terms and identify one personal learning goal they want to track.
Understanding how to track progress empowers students to take ownership of their learning, celebrate their achievements, and recognize areas where they can grow. This lesson helps build self-awareness and self-advocacy skills early on.
Audience
1st Grade Students
Time

Approach
Through discussion, visual aids, and a simple activity, students will grasp basic progress tracking.
Materials
My Learning Journey Slide Deck, My Learning Journey Script, and My Learning Tracker Worksheet
Prep
Prepare Materials
10 minutes
- Review the My Learning Journey Slide Deck to familiarize yourself with the content.
- Read through the My Learning Journey Script to prepare for guiding the discussion.
- Print copies of the My Learning Tracker Worksheet, one for each student.
- Gather pencils or crayons for students.
Step 1
Warm-Up: What Do You Want to Learn?
5 minutes
- Begin by asking students what new things they are excited to learn or get better at. (e.g., "Who learned how to tie their shoes? Who wants to learn to read a new book?")
- Explain that today we'll talk about how we get better at things.
Step 2
Introduce Progress Monitoring
10 minutes
- Use the My Learning Journey Slide Deck to introduce the concept of 'progress' (getting better) and 'monitoring' (watching how we get better).
- Use simple examples like learning to ride a bike or building with blocks to illustrate.
- Emphasize that everyone learns at their own pace and that trying is the most important part.
- Facilitate discussion using questions from the My Learning Journey Script.
Step 3
My Learning Tracker Activity
10 minutes
- Distribute the My Learning Tracker Worksheet.
- Guide students to identify one simple learning goal they have (e.g., reading 5 new words, counting to 50, writing their name without help).
- Have them draw or write their goal in the designated space.
- Explain how they can color in a star each time they practice or achieve a small step towards their goal. (Teacher should model this on the board).
Step 4
Share and Reflect
5 minutes
- Ask a few students to share their learning goal and how they plan to track their progress.
- Conclude by reinforcing that tracking progress helps them see how far they've come and what they can do next.
- Distribute the Cool Down: One Thing I Learned Today for students to complete as an exit ticket.
Slide Deck
Welcome to Our Learning Journey!
Hello amazing learners!
Today, we're going on a special journey together: a learning journey!
Welcome students and introduce the exciting topic of learning and growing. Ask students what 'learning' means to them.
What is Progress?
Progress means getting better at something!
It's like when you:
- Learn a new word
- Get faster at counting
- Can tie your shoes all by yourself!
Explain 'progress' using simple language and examples relevant to 1st graders. Think about things they're learning right now, like reading, writing, or math. You can also use physical examples like growing taller.
What is Monitoring?
Monitoring means watching and keeping track of something.
It's like when you:
- Watch a seed grow into a plant
- Keep track of how many books you read
- See how many times you can hop on one foot!
Explain 'monitoring' in a straightforward way. Connect it to watching or keeping track. Use an analogy they understand, like watching a plant grow or keeping track of points in a game.
Progress Monitoring: Watching Ourselves Grow!
So, progress monitoring is watching ourselves as we get better at things!
It helps us see:
- How much we've learned!
- What we still want to learn next!
- How amazing we are for trying!
Combine the two concepts. Emphasize that 'progress monitoring' is simply watching ourselves get better. Reiterate that it's normal to take time and effort.
Your Own Learning Goal!
What is one thing you want to get better at?
Maybe:
- Reading more words?
- Writing your name neatly?
- Learning new numbers?
Introduce the idea of setting a simple, achievable goal. Ask students to think about one thing they'd like to improve on. This will lead into the worksheet activity.
Let's Track Our Progress!
We'll use a special tracker to watch our progress!
1. Write or draw your goal.
2. Color a star each time you practice or get closer to your goal!
3. See how many stars you can get!
Explain how the 'My Learning Tracker Worksheet' works. Model filling in a sample goal and coloring a star. Make it fun and encourage them.
Celebrate Your Learning!
Every step you take is important!
Keep trying, keep learning, and celebrate your amazing progress! You are all super learners!
End with a positive message about celebrating effort and continuous learning.

My Learning Journey: Teacher Script
Warm-Up: What Do You Want to Learn? (5 minutes)
"Good morning, super learners! I am so excited to be here with you today. Let's start with a fun question: What is something new you are excited to learn or get better at? Maybe you want to learn to tie your shoes all by yourself? Or read a new book? Or become super speedy at counting?
Think about it for a moment. What's a skill you're working on, or something you really want to achieve?"
(Allow a few students to share their ideas. Encourage a variety of responses, from academic to personal skills.)
"Those are wonderful goals! Today, we're going to talk about something really important that helps us with all our learning journeys: it's called progress monitoring! Sounds like a big phrase, but it's really simple and super helpful. It's all about watching ourselves get better at things!"
Introduce Progress Monitoring (10 minutes)
"Let's look at our My Learning Journey Slide Deck to understand this better. Can everyone see the first slide? Great!
(Advance to Slide 2: "What is Progress?")
"First, let's talk about Progress. When we make progress, it means we are getting better at something. It's like when you first tried to ride a bike. Maybe you wobbled a lot, or you needed someone to hold on. But with practice, you got better, and soon you were zooming all by yourself! That's progress!
What are some other ways you've made progress lately? Maybe you've learned to write a new letter, or you can count higher than before?"
(Allow for a few student examples. Praise their efforts and successes.)
"Fantastic examples! You are all making progress every single day.
(Advance to Slide 3: "What is Monitoring?")
"Now, let's talk about Monitoring. Monitoring just means watching and keeping track of something. Imagine you planted a tiny seed. You don't just plant it and forget it, right? You watch it, you water it, you monitor its growth to see if it's getting bigger. Or maybe you keep track of how many gold stars you earn for good behavior. You are monitoring your stars!
Can anyone think of another time we monitor something, or watch it carefully?"
(Take a few responses. Guide them to examples of tracking or observing.)
"You've got it! So, if progress is getting better, and monitoring is watching, what do you think Progress Monitoring means?"
(Advance to Slide 4: "Progress Monitoring: Watching Ourselves Grow!")
"That's right! Progress monitoring is simply watching ourselves as we get better at things! It helps us see how much we've learned, what we still want to learn next, and most importantly, how amazing we are for trying and learning! It's like having your own personal cheerleader to celebrate your small steps and big leaps!"
My Learning Tracker Activity (10 minutes)
(Advance to Slide 5: "Your Own Learning Goal!")
"Now it's YOUR turn to be a progress monitor for yourself! Think about that thing you shared at the beginning, or a new idea. What is one thing you want to get better at? It could be reading five new words, writing your name super neatly, or learning to count to a bigger number. Choose something simple that you can work on this week."
*(Distribute the My Learning Tracker Worksheet.)
"Everyone has a My Learning Tracker Worksheet now. Look at the space at the top where it says 'My Goal'. I want you to either draw a picture of your goal or write it down if you can. For example, if my goal is 'reading more books,' I might draw a stack of books."
(Model drawing/writing a simple goal on the board or a large paper. Give students a few minutes to complete this step.)
(Advance to Slide 6: "Let's Track Our Progress!")
"Now, look at the stars on your sheet. Each time you practice your goal, or you take a small step towards it, you get to color in one star! If my goal is to read more books, every time I read a new page or a short book, I can color a star. If my goal is to write my name neatly, every time I practice writing it, I color a star. It's a way to see all the hard work you're doing!
I'll walk around and help you if you need ideas for your goal or how to track it. Remember, this is your learning journey!"
(Circulate and assist students, providing encouragement and clarifying the activity.)
Share and Reflect (5 minutes)
"Alright, super monitors! Can a few brave learners share their learning goal and maybe tell us how they plan to track their progress using their stars?"
(Invite 2-3 students to share. Keep it brief and positive.)
"Amazing goals, everyone! Remember, learning is a journey, not a race. Your My Learning Tracker Worksheet is a special tool to help you see how far you've come and to celebrate every single step you take. Keep trying, keep practicing, and keep shining!
(Advance to Slide 7: "Celebrate Your Learning!")
"As an exit ticket, please complete the Cool Down: One Thing I Learned Today. On this paper, I want you to write or draw one thing you learned about progress monitoring today, or one way you will use your learning tracker. When you're done, you can turn it in as you leave."
"You are all super learners, and I'm so proud of your effort today! Keep those learning engines running!"
