My Inner Compass: What Guides Your Decisions?
What is something you believe in strongly?
Let's find out what truly matters to you!
Welcome students and introduce the topic. Ask the warm-up question: "What is something you believe in strongly?" Allow a few students to share their thoughts briefly.
What Are Personal Values?
Your 'Inner Compass'
- Values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work.
- They are like a guide or a compass that helps you make decisions.
- They tell you what matters most to you.
Explain what personal values are. Use the analogy of an 'inner compass.' Give a few simple examples like 'honesty' or 'kindness.'
Ask: "Why do you think it's important to know what your values are?"
Discover Your Compass
How do we find our values?
- Through reflection
- By thinking about what makes us happy, proud, or even upset
- Considering what's truly important in life
Introduce the idea of exploring their own values using the worksheet. Explain that values can come from family, friends, experiences, and beliefs.

Sorting What Matters Most
- First Sort: Divide your cards into three piles:
- Very Important
- Somewhat Important
- Not Important

- Second Sort: From your 'Very Important' pile, choose your top 5-7 core values.
Explain the Values Card Sort Activity. Clarify the sorting categories: 'Very Important,' 'Somewhat Important,' and 'Not Important.' Then, the second step of narrowing down to top 5-7. Circulate and assist students.
Reflect and Share
What did you discover?
- What are one or two of your most important values?
- Why do these values resonate with you?
- How might knowing these values help you in the future?
Facilitate a class discussion. Ask students to share 1-2 of their top values and why they chose them. Encourage respectful listening.
Prompts:
- "How do these values influence decisions you make every day?"
- "Can your values change over time? Why or why not?"
Live Your Values!
Your inner compass is a powerful guide.
- Understanding your values helps you make choices that feel right for you.
