My 'I Can' Adventure Map

Students will identify their personal strengths and set one small, achievable "I Can" goal, fostering a positive "can-do" attitude.

This lesson helps young children recognize their unique abilities and empowers them to believe in themselves. By setting and achieving small goals, they build confidence and learn the value of perseverance, which are crucial for early development.

Prep

Review Materials and Prepare

15 minutes

  • Review the Slide Deck: My 'I Can' Adventure Map to familiarize yourself with the content.
    - Print enough copies of the Worksheet: My 'I Can' Adventure Map for each student.
    - Gather crayons, colored pencils, and any optional stickers or rewards.
    - Ensure your whiteboard or projector is ready for use.

Warm-Up: What Can You Do?

  • Begin with a quick Warm-Up activity.

Step 2

Introduction: Our 'I Can' Adventure

  • Introduce the concept of an "I Can" adventure. Explain that everyone has special things they can do, and we're going to explore them!
    - Use the Slide Deck: My 'I Can' Adventure Map to guide the discussion.
    - Discuss what it means to be good at something and how we can learn new things. (Refer to Slide 3 and Slide 4)

Activity: Mapping Our Strengths

15 minutes

  • Hand out the Worksheet: My 'I Can' Adventure Map.
    - Guide students through the worksheet, helping them draw or write about things they can do well.
    - Encourage them to think about different areas: physical, academic, social. (Refer to Slide 5)

Step 4

Setting an 'I Can' Goal

10 minutes

  • Introduce the idea of setting a small, achievable "I Can" goal.
    - Provide examples: "I can tie my shoes," "I can read one book," "I can help a friend."
    - Have students choose one goal and draw or write it on their adventure map worksheet.
    - Emphasize that it's okay if they don't reach their goal right away; the important thing is to try! (Refer to Slide 6 and Slide 7)

Share and Celebrate

  • Invite students to share their "I Can" maps and goals with a partner or the class.
    - Emphasize celebrating effort and progress. (Refer to Slide 8)

My 'I Can' Adventure Map Activity

Objective: To create a visual representation of personal strengths and a new, achievable goal.

Materials:

  • Adventure Map Worksheet
  • Crayons, colored pencils, or markers
  • Stickers (optional)

Instructions:

Part 1: My Strengths Island (10 minutes)

  1. Look at the big island at the beginning of your Adventure Map Worksheet.
  2. This is your "Strengths Island"! On this island, draw or write all the things you are good at. Maybe you are good at drawing, running, being kind, helping friends, or building with blocks. Draw pictures or ask your teacher to help you write words for your strengths.











Part 2: My New Adventure (15 minutes)

  1. Now look at the path leading from your Strengths Island to the smaller islands. These are your "Adventure Destinations"!
  2. Think about one new thing you want to try, or something you want to get better at. It should be a small goal that you can work towards.
    • Examples: Learning a new letter, counting to a higher number, trying a new food, zipping up your coat, or sharing your toys more often.
  3. On one of the smaller islands, draw or write your new adventure goal. This is your personal "I Can" challenge! You can also draw a picture of what it will look like when you achieve it.











Part 3: Decorate Your Map (5 minutes)

  1. Use crayons, colored pencils, or markers to color your map and make it unique!
  2. Add stickers along your path to show your journey from "Strengths Island" to your "Adventure Destination."
  3. Remember, every step on your map is about learning and growing! You are an adventurer, and you CAN do it!
