Understand family structure

In this lesson, students will share information about their family members and create a family tree to understand their family structure. This lesson is important as it helps students recognize and appreciate their family members, fostering a sense of belonging and identity.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

Begin by welcoming the students and explaining that today they will be learning about their families. Ask them if they know what a family tree is and explain that it shows the different members of their family and how they are related.

Step 2

Discussion

10 mins

Engage the students in a discussion about their family members. Ask questions like: 'Who lives in your house?', 'Do you have any brothers or sisters?', 'What do you call your grandparents?' Encourage students to share and listen to each other.

Step 3

Family Tree Activity

25 mins

Hand out the Printable Family Tree Worksheet to each student. Provide markers, crayons, construction paper, scissors, and glue. Instruct the students to draw or paste pictures of their family members on the tree. Assist them in labeling each member. Walk around the room to provide help and encouragement.

Step 4

Closure

5 mins

Gather the students and ask them to share their family trees with the class. Praise their efforts and creativity. Conclude by emphasizing the importance of family and how each family is unique and special.
