First Click Explorer Lesson Plan

In this 15-minute, one-on-one Tier 3 lesson, the student will learn the fundamental steps of using a computer—powering it on, using the mouse to click icons, and recognizing basic on-screen elements—through a guided social story and hands-on practice.

Prep

Gather and Review Materials

5 minutes

  • Print or load the First Click Explorer Social Story.
  • Set up a computer station with a visible power button, mouse, and keyboard.
  • Familiarize yourself with each step in the social story so you can model clearly.

Step 1

Warm-Up Conversation

2 minutes

  • Invite the student to sit at the computer station.
  • Ask: “Have you ever used a computer before? What do you think a computer can do?”
  • Listen and validate any ideas to build rapport.

Step 2

Introduce Social Story

3 minutes

  • Show the first page of the First Click Explorer Social Story.
  • Read aloud each page, pointing to pictures and text.
  • Ask simple questions: “What do you see here? What will happen next?”

Step 3

Guided Step-by-Step Practice

8 minutes

  • Step 1: Model pressing the power button and say, “I press the power button to turn the computer on.”
  • Ask the student to press the power button themselves.
  • Step 2: Wait together for the desktop to appear, narrating, “Now I wait for the screen to show icons.”
  • Step 3: Show how to move the mouse to an icon and click; have the student imitate once.
  • Provide praise and gentle guidance at each step, referring back to the social story images.

Wrap-Up and Encourage Independence

  • Review the three steps: power on, wait, click an icon.
  • Ask the student to tell you the steps in their own words.
  • Offer positive feedback and suggest they try again later on their own.

Welcome! Today we will learn:
• How to power on a computer
• How to wait for the screen to load
• How to click an icon

Welcome the student and introduce the lesson. Say: “Today we’re going to be computer explorers! We’ll learn three easy steps to turn on the computer and click an icon.”

Step 1: Power On the Computer

• Find the power button on the computer case or monitor
• Press the button gently until you see lights or hear a sound

Point to the picture of the power button in the social story. Model pressing the button once, then invite the student to try.

Step 2: Wait for the Screen to Load

• Look at the screen after powering on
• Wait patiently for the desktop icons to appear

Explain that the computer needs a moment to get ready. Show the student how you watch the screen together until icons appear.

Step 3: Click an Icon

• Move the mouse so the pointer is over an icon
• Press the left mouse button once to open it

Demonstrate moving the mouse and clicking on a colorful icon. Emphasize gentle, single clicks. Then let the student have a turn.

Recap: Your Computer Steps

  1. Power on the computer
  2. Wait for the icons to appear

Great job exploring your first clicks!

Ask the student to recall each step in order. Offer praise and encourage them to try again on their own later.

My Computer Adventure Social Story

Page 1: Ready to Explore!

I am a computer explorer! Today, I will learn three easy steps to use a computer all by myself. A computer can help me draw pictures, watch videos, and learn new things.

Page 2: Step 1 – Power On the Computer

First, I look for the power button. It might be on the front of the computer or on the side of the monitor.

I press the button gently one time.

I say, “I press the power button to turn the computer on.”

Page 3: Step 2 – Wait for the Screen to Load

After I press the button, I wait.

I watch the screen carefully.

The screen will show bright colors and pictures when it is ready.

I say, “Now I wait for the icons to appear.”

Next, I move the mouse until the pointer is on a picture (called an icon).

I press the left mouse button gently one time.

I say, “I click the icon to open my program.”

I used three steps all by myself:
