Developing a positive body image and strong self-esteem during middle school is crucial for girls' mental health, academic success, and overall well-being as they navigate societal pressures and personal growth.

Step 1

Warm-Up: Mirror, Mirror...

5 minutes

  1. Begin by asking students to think about one thing they like about themselves, without saying it aloud.
  2. Lead a brief, non-judgmental discussion: "How easy or hard was it to think of something positive? Why do you think that is?" (2 minutes)
  3. Introduce the day's topic: body positivity and self-empowerment. (1 minute)

Step 2

Reading & Discussion: What is Body Positivity?

10 minutes

  1. Distribute the Body Positivity Reading.
  2. Have students read the article individually or in small groups (5 minutes).
  3. Use the Discussion Prompts to facilitate a class discussion. Focus on defining body positivity and identifying external influences. (5 minutes)

Step 3

Activity: Power Pose Power-Up!

10 minutes

  1. Introduce the concept of 'power poses' and how they can influence feelings of confidence.
  2. Distribute Power Pose Activity Cards to small groups.
  3. Have students demonstrate and discuss the feelings associated with different poses. (7 minutes)
  4. Encourage students to create their own 'power pose' and share if comfortable. (3 minutes)

Step 4

Game: Affirmation Bingo

8 minutes

  1. Distribute Affirmation Bingo Cards.
  2. Explain that each square contains a positive affirmation.
  3. Call out affirmations one by one. Students mark off squares as they hear an affirmation that resonates with them. The goal is to get 5 in a row.
  4. Briefly discuss how practicing affirmations can help build self-esteem.

Step 5

Cool-Down: My Future Self

2 minutes

  1. Ask students to write down one positive affirmation they will use this week to boost their self-esteem.
  2. Collect as an exit ticket or allow students to share if they wish.

Power Pose Power-Up!

Instructions:

  1. Work in small groups.
  2. Each group will receive a set of "Power Pose" cards.
  3. Take turns picking a card and striking the pose.
  4. As you hold the pose, pay attention to how your body feels. What emotions come up? Do you feel stronger, more confident, more relaxed?
  5. Discuss with your group: How did that pose make you feel? How might adopting a confident posture impact your mindset?
  6. Create Your Own! As a group, come up with your own unique "Power Pose" that makes you feel strong and confident. Share it with the class if you feel comfortable!

Power Pose Card 1: The Wonder Woman / Superman

  • Pose: Stand tall, feet shoulder-width apart, hands on your hips, chest out, and chin slightly up. Imagine yourself as a superhero!
  • Feeling: Powerful, brave, strong.

Power Pose Card 2: The Expansive Reach

  • Pose: Stand with your arms stretched wide above your head, reaching towards the sky. Your body should take up as much space as possible.
  • Feeling: Open, limitless, victorious.

Power Pose Card 3: The Confident Lean

  • Pose: Stand with one hand resting casually on a hip, leaning slightly back, with a relaxed but alert expression. Shift your weight to one leg.
  • Feeling: Chill, self-assured, cool.

  • Pose: If you have a table or desk, lean slightly forward with both hands flat on the surface. Stand firm and grounded.

Affirmation Bingo: Love Your Vibe!

How to Play:

  1. Each person gets an Affirmation Bingo Card.
  2. The teacher will read out positive affirmations one by one.
  3. If an affirmation resonates with you, or describes something true about you, mark it on your card.
  4. The first person to get five squares in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) shouts "BINGO!"
  5. We will then share some of the affirmations that made us feel good.
