Mindful Movement Warm-Up (5 minutes)
"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to explore something truly amazing: our bodies! But not just how they look, but what incredible things they can do. To start, let's get our bodies moving a little bit.
Please stand up next to your desks. Find a little space. Now, I want you to gently reach your arms up towards the sky, really feeling that stretch in your side. Inhale as you reach up... and exhale as you slowly bring your arms down. How does that feel?
Now, let's try touching our toes, or at least reaching towards them. Feel the stretch in the back of your legs. Don't worry if you can't touch your toes, just go as far as feels comfortable for your body. What muscles can you feel working?
Finally, let's do some gentle neck rolls. Slowly roll your head from side to side, listening to your body and how it feels. Focus on the sensations in your neck and shoulders.
Great job! You can have a seat. What did you notice about your body as you moved? (Pause for a few student responses) It's pretty amazing what our bodies can do, isn't it?"
Shift Focus from Appearance to Function (10 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck - Slide 3: Beyond Appearance: What Can Your Body DO?)
Today, we're going to celebrate our bodies like they are superheroes. Think about a superhero, they have incredible powers and abilities, right? Our bodies are the same!
Often, we hear a lot about how bodies look. But today, we're going to shift our focus completely. We're going to think about all the powerful, functional, and incredible things our bodies do for us every single day, without us even having to ask.
Let's brainstorm a bit. What amazing things can your body do? Don't think about how it looks, think about its actions, its senses, its capabilities! (Pause for student responses, encourage a wide range of answers like 'run,' 'jump,' 'think,' 'laugh,' 'taste,' 'hear,' 'heal itself,' 'dance,' 'play sports,' 'hug,' 'read,' 'write.')
Fantastic ideas! How does your body help you every day, in ways you might not even realize? (Encourage answers like 'walk to school,' 'eat my favorite food,' 'listen to music,' 'learn new things,' 'sleep and rest.')"
"My Amazing Body" Gratitude Activity (10 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck - Slide 4: "My Amazing Body" Gratitude Activity)
Now that we've thought about all these incredible things our bodies can do, let's put that gratitude into writing. I'm going to hand out these Body Gratitude Journal Page pages.
On this page, I want you to write down at least three things you are genuinely grateful your body can do. Remember, we are focusing on functionality and ability, not how your body looks. Think about your strength, your health, your senses, your ability to move, to learn, to create.
For example, instead of 'I like my strong legs,' you might write, 'I am grateful my legs are strong enough to let me run and play soccer.' Or 'I'm grateful for my hands that let me draw and write.' Get specific! You have about 10 minutes for this."
Creating Body Positive Affirmations (7 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck - Slide 5: Create Your Own Body Affirmation!)
Wonderful reflections, everyone. Now, we're going to create something special to help us remember how amazing our bodies are. We're going to make body-positive affirmations.
Does anyone know what an 'affirmation' is? (Allow for student responses.) That's right! An affirmation is a positive statement that you say to yourself, or think, to help you feel good, confident, and strong. It's like giving your brain a little pep talk!
We're going to set up an Affirmation Creation Station. You'll find different art supplies like cardstock, markers, colored pencils, and stickers. Your task is to create your own personal body-positive affirmation card. Think about what you wrote in your journal. What powerful statement can you create about your body's strength, health, or abilities?
Examples could be: 'My body is strong and carries me through the day,' or 'I am grateful for my healthy heart that keeps me going,' or 'My hands are creative and help me build new things.'
These cards are for you. You can keep them at your desk, put them in your locker, or take them home. Let's take about 7 minutes to create these powerful reminders."
Closing Circle Share-Out (3 minutes)
"(Display Slide Deck - Slide 6: Closing Circle: Share Your Superpowers!)
Alright, artists and body celebrators! Let's bring it back together. Before we finish today, I'd love for a few volunteers to share either one thing they wrote in their Body Gratitude Journal Page or one of the affirmations they created. Only if you feel comfortable sharing, of course.
(Call on 2-3 volunteers.)
Thank you for sharing your powerful thoughts and creativity. It's so important to remember that every single one of us has a unique and amazing body that does incredible things. Let's continue to appreciate and be kind to our bodies for all they do, celebrating their strength and health every day.
Great work today, everyone!"
