Lesson Plan

Multiply Master Stations

Students will be able to successfully apply the standard algorithm to multiply multi-digit numbers by working through differentiated stations.

Understanding the standard multiplication algorithm is a fundamental skill that underpins many higher-level math concepts and real-world problem-solving, from calculating costs to understanding data.

Audience

5th Grade Students

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Station-based learning with direct instruction and guided practice.

Prep

Teacher Preparation

15 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up & Introduction (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Display the first slide of the Multiply Master Stations Slide Deck (Title Slide).
    - Distribute the Multiplication Warm-Up to students. Give them 2-3 minutes to complete it individually.
    - Review the warm-up together as a class, focusing on the connection between repeated addition and multiplication.
    - Introduce the lesson objectives using the slide deck. Explain that today, they will become multiplication masters by rotating through stations to learn and practice the standard algorithm.

Step 2

Station Rotations (20 minutes)

20 minutes

  • Explain the three stations and the activity at each:
    - Station 1: Partial Products Practice (Teacher-Led/Review): Students will work on the Station 1 Worksheet: Partial Products Practice, reviewing how partial products connect to the standard algorithm. The teacher can provide direct support here.
    - Station 2: Algorithm Steps Practice (Independent/Paired): Students will use the Station 2 Worksheet: Algorithm Steps Practice to practice the standard algorithm step-by-step. They can work independently or with a partner.
    - Station 3: Multiplication Challenge (Collaborative/Application): Students will solve multi-digit multiplication problems using Station 3 Challenge Cards. This station encourages problem-solving and application of the algorithm in slightly more complex scenarios.
    - Divide students into three groups and assign each to a starting station. Explain the time limit for each station (approx. 6-7 minutes per station).
    - Announce when it's time to rotate. Monitor student progress and provide support as needed at each station. Use the Answer Key: Multiplication Worksheets to quickly check student work or for self-correction.

Step 3

Wrap-Up & Review (5 minutes)

5 minutes

  • Bring the class back together.
    - Ask students to share one new thing they learned or one strategy they found helpful from the stations.
    - Briefly review the main steps of the standard algorithm for multiplication, perhaps by solving one problem together on the board or using the slide deck.
    - Reiterate the importance of practice and precision in multiplication.
    - Assign any remaining worksheet problems or challenge cards as homework, if desired.

Slide Deck

Welcome, Multiplication Masters!

Get ready to unlock the secrets of multiplying big numbers!

Welcome students and introduce the exciting journey to becoming multiplication masters! Explain that today they will learn a powerful tool for multiplication.

What is Multiplication?

It's like super-fast repeated addition!

Example: 3 x 4 means 3 groups of 4 (4 + 4 + 4)

Think: How else can we think about multiplication?

Review the concept of multiplication. Ask students how they might solve 13 x 4 without the standard algorithm (e.g., repeated addition, arrays, partial products). This slide is a quick recap and a bridge to the new method.

Today's Mission: The Standard Algorithm

Our Goal:

  • Learn the steps to multiply larger numbers.
  • Practice, practice, practice!
  • Become multiplication whizzes!

Introduce the standard algorithm as an efficient method. Explain that the stations will break it down step-by-step. Go over the objectives for the lesson.

Your Journey: The Master Stations

Station 1: Partial Products Power-Up

* Reviewing how we multiply by breaking numbers apart.

Station 2: Algorithm Action!

* Step-by-step practice with the standard algorithm.

Station 3: Challenge Accepted!

* Solving trickier problems to apply your new skills.

Briefly explain what each station entails. Emphasize that Station 1 is a review/teacher support, Station 2 is guided practice, and Station 3 is for application. Set expectations for movement and collaboration.

Station Time! Rotate Every ~7 Minutes

Let the Multiplication Begin!

  • Station 1: Partial Products Power-Up
  • Station 2: Algorithm Action!
  • Station 3: Challenge Accepted!

Remember to help your classmates and ask questions!

Display this slide while students are working at their stations. It serves as a visual reminder of the rotation schedule and a timer.

Mission Accomplished! What Did We Learn?

Quick Review:

  • What are the key steps of the standard algorithm?
  • Why is it important to multiply accurately?

Keep Practicing!

* Multiplication is a super skill for everyday life!

Bring students back together. Facilitate a brief discussion. Ask: "What was one new thing you learned?" or "What was a helpful tip you picked up?" Reiterate key takeaways.
