Lesson Plan

Multiply & Divide It!

Students will solve multiplication and division word problems involving four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers (TEK 4.4d), demonstrating their ability to apply appropriate operations and strategies.

Mastering these problem-solving skills is essential for real-world scenarios, building confidence, and preparing students for more advanced mathematical concepts.

Audience

4th Grade Students (Tier 2 Small Group)

Time

15 minutes

Approach

Guided small group practice with targeted word problems.

Materials

Multiply & Divide It! Slide Deck, Multiply & Divide It! Activity Cards, Multiply & Divide It! Answer Key, Whiteboards or scratch paper, and Dry-erase markers (if using whiteboards)

Prep

Prepare Materials

5 minutes

Step 1

Warm-Up (2 minutes)

2 minutes

Gather students in a small group. Briefly review key vocabulary for multiplication (product, factor) and division (quotient, divisor, dividend). Ask students to quickly share one real-world example where they might multiply or divide a large number.

Step 2

Introduction to Activity (3 minutes)

3 minutes

Display the first slide of the Multiply & Divide It! Slide Deck to introduce the activity. Explain that they will work together to solve word problems using multiplication and division. Emphasize thinking through the problem, identifying the operation, and showing their work.

Step 3

Guided Practice with Activity Cards (8 minutes)

8 minutes

Distribute the Multiply & Divide It! Activity Cards. Work through the first one or two problems together as a group, modeling thinking strategies. Allow students to work on subsequent cards collaboratively or individually with teacher support. Encourage discussion and explanation of their problem-solving steps. Refer to the Multiply & Divide It! Answer Key as needed for guidance.

Step 4

Wrap-Up and Review (2 minutes)

2 minutes

Quickly review one or two of the problems solved, focusing on the steps taken to arrive at the solution. Ask students what strategy helped them the most during the activity. Collect activity cards (optional) and provide positive reinforcement.

Today, we're going to become experts at solving tricky math problems!

Welcome students to the small group. Introduce the exciting challenge of becoming 'Multiplication and Division Problem Masters'!

Our Mission Today: TEK 4.4d

Objective:

Solve multiplication and division word problems involving four-digit by one-digit numbers.

Why it matters:

These skills help us solve real-world problems!

Explain that TEK 4.4d is all about solving word problems with big numbers. Emphasize that these skills are used every day, like when planning a party or sharing items. Link to the Multiply & Divide It! Lesson Plan for full context.

Problem-Solving Strategies

  • Read Carefully: Understand what the problem is asking.
  • Keywords: Look for words that tell you to multiply or divide.
  • Choose Your Operation: Decide if you need to multiply or divide.
  • Show Your Work: Write down your steps clearly.
  • Check Your Answer: Does your answer make sense?

Quickly review key strategies. Ask students to share one tip they already use when solving word problems.

Let's Practice!

Now it's your turn!

Work together to solve the problems on your activity cards.

Remember to use our strategies and show your work!

Explain that they will now receive activity cards and work together. Remind them to use the strategies discussed. Transition to distributing the Multiply & Divide It! Activity Cards.

Here are the solutions and steps for each activity card.

Card 1: Farmer Joe harvested 2,345 apples each day for 3 days. How many apples did he harvest in total?

Thought Process:

  • The problem asks for a total when a number is repeated over several days, indicating multiplication.
  • We need to multiply 2,345 by 3.

Solution:

  2345
x 3
------
  7035

Farmer Joe harvested 7,035 apples in total.

Card 2: A factory produced 4,872 toy cars. They need to pack them equally into 6 boxes. How many toy cars will be in each box?
