Multiplication Strategies

How Do We Remember?

  • Skip Counting: (e.g., 5, 10, 15... for 5s)
  • Repeated Addition: (e.g., 3 x 4 = 4 + 4 + 4)
  • Commutative Property: (e.g., 3 x 7 is the same as 7 x 3)
  • Breaking Apart: (e.g., 7 x 8 = (5 x 8) + (2 x 8))

What are your favorite strategies?

Briefly review some strategies they might already know or introduce new ones. Keep it quick and interactive.

Answer Key

Multiplication Answer Key

Multiplication Warm-Up: Brain Boost Blitz Answers

  1. 5 x 7 = 35
    • Thought Process: Think of 5 groups of 7, or skip counting by 5s, seven times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35.
  2. 8 x 3 = 24
    • Thought Process: Think of 8 groups of 3, or 3 groups of 8. Skip count by 8s, three times: 8, 16, 24.
  3. 6 x 6 = 36
    • Thought Process: This is a common square fact. 6 groups of 6 equals 36.
  4. 9 x 4 = 36
    • Thought Process: Think of 9 groups of 4. You can also think (10 x 4) - 4 = 40 - 4 = 36.
  5. 7 x 7 = 49
    • Thought Process: Another common square fact. 7 groups of 7 equals 49.
  6. 12 x 2 = 24
    • Thought Process: 12 groups of 2, or double 12, which is 24.
  7. 11 x 5 = 55
    • Thought Process: Think of 11 groups of 5, or 5 groups of 11. Skip count by 5s, eleven times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55.
  8. 10 x 8 = 80
    • Thought Process: Any number multiplied by 10, you just add a zero to the end of the number being multiplied (8 in this case).
  9. 4 x 9 = 36
    • Thought Process: This is the commutative property of 9 x 4. It also equals 36.
  10. 3 x 12 = 36
    • Thought Process: Think of 3 groups of 12: 12 + 12 + 12 = 36.
