Lesson Plan

Morning Meeting Routines

Students will actively participate in a structured morning meeting by identifying the date and weather, setting a personal daily goal, and engaging with a practical life skill activity to enhance independence and routine adherence.

Establishing consistent routines helps students predict daily events, reduces anxiety, and builds foundational independence. This lesson reinforces essential life skills like communication, self-care, social skills, and time management in a predictable, supportive format.

Audience

9th-12th Grade Life Skills Students

Time

30-45 minutes

Approach

Interactive slides with clear visuals and concise language.

Smartboard or Projector, Markers or Dry-Erase Pens (if using a whiteboard), Morning Meeting Slides, Daily Goal Worksheet (optional), and Life Skill Activity Cards (optional)

Prep

Review Materials

10 minutes

Review the Morning Meeting Slides and customize any elements as needed. Prepare any optional physical materials like printed Daily Goal Worksheet or Life Skill Activity Cards.

Step 1

Greeting & Check-in

5 minutes

Begin the morning meeting using the Morning Meeting Slides.
* Slide 1: Welcome! Greet students warmly. Ask each student to share a simple 'How are you today?' response, using visuals (e.g., happy, neutral, sad faces) if helpful.
* Slide 2: Today's Greeting. Encourage students to respond to the daily greeting prompt on the slide.

Step 2

Calendar & Weather Check

10 minutes

Transition to the calendar and weather sections.
* Slide 3: What Day Is It? Guide students to identify the current day, date, month, and year. Use pointing, verbal cues, or direct selection.
* Slide 4: What's the Weather? Discuss the current weather conditions. Ask students to describe or choose the weather icon that matches outside. Briefly discuss appropriate clothing for the weather.

Step 3

Daily Goal Setting

10 minutes

Facilitate personal goal setting.
* Slide 5: My Daily Goal. Explain that setting a goal helps us focus. Provide simple examples like 'I will listen,' 'I will help,' or 'I will finish my task.' Have students verbally state or point to their goal for the day. An optional Daily Goal Worksheet can be used here.

Step 4

Life Skill Spotlight

15 minutes

Introduce and practice a practical life skill.
* Slide 6: Life Skill Spotlight. Introduce the life skill for the day (e.g., 'Washing Hands,' 'Making a Snack,' 'Asking for Help'). Use the visuals and simple steps on the slide.
* Slide 7: Let's Practice! Engage students in a short activity or discussion related to the life skill. This could be a role-play, a sequence ordering task, or a simple hands-on demonstration. If using Life Skill Activity Cards, choose one to focus on.

Slide Deck

Good Morning, Everyone!

Welcome to our Morning Meeting!

Welcome students warmly as they arrive. Model a simple greeting. Encourage each student to share how they are feeling using simple words or by pointing to an emotion icon if provided in the classroom.

Today's Greeting:

Say "Good morning!" to a friend.

Read the greeting aloud. Prompt students to respond with a simple action or word (e.g., "Good morning, Teacher!" or a wave). Encourage eye contact if appropriate.

What Day Is It?

Today is: [Day of the week]
The Date is: [Month] [Day], [Year]

Use a physical calendar or interactive board to go through each item. Point to the day, date, month, and year as you say them. Ask students to repeat or identify them.

What's the Weather Like?

Is it...
☀️ Sunny?
☁️ Cloudy?
🌧️ Rainy?
❄️ Snowy?

Look outside the window together. Ask students to describe what they see. Guide them to select the correct weather icon. Discuss appropriate clothing briefly.

My Daily Goal:

What is one thing you want to try to do today?

* Listen carefully?
* Help a friend?
* Finish my work?

Explain what a goal is in simple terms. Give examples of simple, achievable goals (e.g., "I will raise my hand," "I will stay on task"). Have students state or point to a goal they want to work on today.

Life Skill Spotlight: Hand Washing

Why do we wash our hands?

When should we wash our hands?

Let's learn the steps!
