Mood Meter Lesson Plan

Students will identify and articulate their current feelings using the Mood Meter check-in tool and develop a personalized coping strategy to manage anxiety.

This lesson builds emotional self-awareness, helps students recognize anxiety triggers, and practices coping skills to reduce stress and improve well-being.

Prep

Setup and Review Materials

5 minutes

  • Print copies of Mood Meter Check-In PDF.
  • Arrange a quiet, comfortable space free from distractions.
  • Review the student’s IEP or 504 plan for any needed accommodations, such as visual supports or extended time.

Step 1

Introduction

5 minutes

  • Greet the student and explain the session’s purpose: tracking feelings and developing coping skills.
  • Briefly introduce the Mood Meter quadrants (red, blue, yellow, green) and how they map to emotions.

Step 2

Mood Identification

10 minutes

  • Provide the student with the Mood Meter Check-In PDF and a writing utensil.
  • Ask the student to reflect on their current emotion and circle the corresponding quadrant on the PDF.
  • Prompt them to write one word that best describes how they feel right now.

Step 3

Explore Feeling

10 minutes

  • Use open-ended questions to explore their feeling: What happened today to trigger this emotion? Where in your body do you notice this feeling?
  • Listen actively and validate the student’s experience.
  • Offer visual cues or simplify language as needed for clarity and comfort.

Step 4

Coping Plan and Closure

5 minutes

  • Collaborate with the student to choose a coping strategy (e.g., deep breathing, sensory break, positive self-talk).
  • Have the student record the chosen strategy on the PDF.
  • Encourage the student to use this plan when they notice similar feelings and schedule a follow-up session.
