Daily Mood Check
Time: 10 minutes
Tier: 1 (Classroom)
Grade: 4th Grade

Materials

Procedure
- Think: Project the Emotion Wheels Slides showing color-coded emotion zones. Ask students to choose one word describing how they feel right now.
- Place: Invite each student to come up and place their name tag or avatar on the Mood Board in the zone matching their chosen emotion.
- Share: Select 2–3 volunteers (30–60 seconds each) to explain their one-word emotion and why they chose it.
- Discuss: Use these prompts to guide a brief whole-class conversation:
- How might today’s mood affect our learning?
- What can we do if we notice a classmate needs support?
- Which emotion is hardest to share? Why?
Reflection (Independent)
In your journal or on the board, write one thing that could help you—or a friend—move toward a more positive mood today:
Tip: Over the week, revisit this check-in daily to track mood changes and build a caring classroom community.
Slide Deck
Emotion Wheel: Understanding Our Feelings
Our emotions can be grouped into four color-coded zones:
• Red Zone: Intense, high-energy feelings
• Yellow Zone: Elevated, but manageable energy
• Green Zone: Calm, happy, focused
• Blue Zone: Low-energy, resting, or sad
Use this wheel every morning to check in on how you feel and share with the class.
Introduce the emotion wheel and explain why tracking our feelings matters. Highlight that all feelings are normal and useful.
Red Zone: High-Energy, Hard to Calm
When you’re in the Red Zone, you might feel:
• Angry or furious
• Out of control or explosive
• Overwhelmed or panicked
These feelings can make it hard to learn or work calmly.
Point to the red quadrant on a projected version of the wheel. Explain that these feelings can be hard to control but are normal.
Blue Zone: Low-Energy, Reflective
When you’re in the Blue Zone, you might feel:
• Sad or disappointed
• Tired or bored
• Lonely or quiet
In this zone, you may need extra support or a moment to recharge.
Highlight the blue quadrant. Explain that it’s OK to have low-energy feelings and that we check in so peers know how to help.
Yellow Zone: Elevated, but Manageable
When you’re in the Yellow Zone, you might feel:
• Excited or enthusiastic
• Worried or nervous
• Silly or frustrated
These feelings have energy but you can still focus with some strategies.
Show the yellow quadrant. Emphasize that these feelings are normal when excited or nervous.
Green Zone: Calm, Focused, Content
When you’re in the Green Zone, you feel:
• Happy or joyful
• Calm or relaxed
• Focused or ready to learn
This is the zone where we learn best and feel our best.
Present the green quadrant. Stress that the green zone is our optimal learning state.
How to Use the Emotion Wheel
- Think: Choose the word and zone that matches your current feeling.
- Place: Move your name tag or avatar on our Class Mood Board in that zone.
- Share: (Optional) Say your word out loud and why you chose it.
