Glow from Within

Students will learn to recognize their emotions, explore healthy coping strategies for feelings of depression, and build resilience by practicing skills and identifying support networks.

Early awareness and practice of coping skills empowers students to manage low moods, build emotional resilience, and seek help when needed, promoting long-term mental well-being.

Setting the Stage

  • Welcome students and introduce the lesson’s goal: learning skills to manage difficult feelings
  • Establish class norms: respectful listening, confidentiality, and no judgment
  • Display the Emotion Wheel Chart and explain how naming emotions can help us understand them

Step 2

Identifying Feelings and Strategies

10 minutes

  • Distribute the Feelings and Coping Strategies Worksheet
  • Use slides 2–5 in the Glow From Within Slideshow to review common feelings and coping strategies
  • Ask students to circle feelings they’ve experienced and write a coping strategy next to each
  • Pair students to share one feeling and strategy, prompting empathy and idea exchange

Strategy Practice

8 minutes

  • Form small groups of 3–4 students
  • Give each group a few Reflection Prompt Cards
  • In turns, students draw a card (e.g., “Describe a time you felt overwhelmed. What could you do now?”), respond, and discuss possible strategies
  • Circulate to support groups and reinforce positive approaches

Skills to manage feelings of depression
7th Grade • 30 minutes

Welcome students. Introduce yourself and the lesson: “Today we’re going to learn skills to manage difficult feelings like feeling low or depressed. By the end, you’ll have a personal toolbox of strategies you can use anytime.”

Introduction & Norms

Distribute the Feelings and Coping Strategies Worksheet. Point to the Emotion Wheel Chart. Give students 7 minutes to circle emotions they’ve felt. Invite a few volunteers to name an emotion and describe why naming it helps.

Mindfulness Practice

• Listen to the Mindful Moment Audio
• Notice your breath and body sensations
• Observe thoughts without judgment

Prepare to play the audio. Explain: “Mindfulness helps us notice thoughts and feelings without judging them.” Play the 2–3 minute Mindful Moment Audio. Afterward, ask: “How did your body or mind feel before and after?”

Building Your Coping Toolbox

• Use the Coping Toolbox Template
• List or draw 5 coping strategies
• In groups, draw a Reflection Prompt Card and discuss

Hand out the Coping Toolbox Template. Invite students to write or draw at least five strategies they can use when feeling low. Then form small groups, draw a Reflection Prompt Card, and discuss how a chosen strategy could help.

Use these cards in your small-group discussions to explore coping strategies. Have each student draw a card, read the prompt aloud, and share their response. Discuss how the suggested strategy could apply in different situations.
