Begin by explaining the objectives of the lesson: understanding mood and tone in literature. Briefly define mood as the atmosphere of a piece of writing and tone as the author's attitude toward the subject.
Distribute the 'Mood and Tone Reading' handout. Have students read the passage individually or in pairs, paying attention to the mood and tone of the text.
Hand out the 'Mood and Tone Worksheet'. Students will answer questions about the mood and tone of the reading passage. Encourage them to use specific examples from the text to support their answers.
Divide the class into small groups. Each group will receive a set of 'Mood and Tone Activity Instructions'. They will create a short skit or tableau that conveys a specific mood and tone. Afterward, groups will present their skits to the class, and classmates will guess the mood and tone being portrayed.
Distribute the 'Mood and Tone Exit Ticket'. Students will write a brief reflection on what they learned about mood and tone, including one example of each from the lesson.
