Mission Ready Set Go Plan

In this 60-minute individual session, Benjamin will practice task initiation, sustained attention, and flexible transitions using engaging, home-based activities with visual supports, aiming for 80% accuracy with no more than 1–2 prompts.

Improving executive functioning helps Benjamin complete tasks independently, stay focused longer, and adapt smoothly between activities, boosting his confidence and reducing frustration.

Step 1

Warm-Up & Goal Review

5 minutes

  • Greet Benjamin and review today’s goals: task initiation, focus, smooth transitions.
  • Show the Task Choice Board and let him choose the first activity.
  • Explain he can earn stickers on the Sticker Chart for each goal met.

Step 2

Task Initiation Practice

15 minutes

  • Present the selected task from the Task Choice Board.
  • Start the Visual Timer Card set to 1 minute.
  • Prompt schedule: if Benjamin doesn’t begin within 30 seconds, give 1 verbal prompt; no more than 1 prompt allowed.
  • Record time-to-initiation and prompt count on the Data Collection Sheet.

Step 3

Sustained Attention Activity

15 minutes

  • Choose a simple puzzle or reading task.
  • Set the Visual Timer Card to 7 minutes.
  • Provide no prompts unless Benjamin disengages for more than 15 seconds; allow 1 redirection prompt maximum.
  • Note engagement duration and redirections on the Data Collection Sheet.

Step 4

Transition Practice

10 minutes

  • Use Transition Countdown Cards to signal shift from the ongoing activity to a new one.
  • Give 3-2-1 countdown visuals.
  • Allow up to 2 prompts (verbal or visual) for Benjamin to move to the next task.
  • Record number of prompts on the Data Collection Sheet.

Step 5

Self-Monitoring & Reinforcement

5 minutes

  • Review achievements: for each successfully met goal, Benjamin places a sticker on the Sticker Chart.
  • Encourage him to verbalize how he felt starting tasks, staying focused, and switching activities.

Step 6

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

10 minutes

  • Summarize data collected and share progress with Benjamin: celebrate successes.
  • Set a simple homework task using the Task Choice Board for practice.
  • Collect all materials and note areas to adjust prompt levels for the next session.

A 60-minute individual session to build Benjamin’s executive functioning skills:

Welcome everyone! Today’s session is called “Mission: Ready, Set, Go.” Explain that Benjamin will be the mission commander, practicing skills to start tasks quickly, focus for longer, and switch between activities smoothly.

Session Objectives

By the end of today’s session, Benjamin will:

• Begin a chosen task within 1 minute of instruction with no more than 1 prompt (80% accuracy)
• Stay engaged in a task for 7 consecutive minutes with no more than 1 redirection (80% accuracy)
• Transition between tasks with no more than 2 prompts (80% accuracy)

Read the objectives aloud and check for understanding. Remind Benjamin that we’ll aim for 80% success and he can earn stickers for each skill he masters.

Setup (15 min): print/laminate visuals, arrange quiet workspace, review prompt hierarchy.

Quickly review each material and demonstrate any visuals: how to start the timer, choose a task, use countdown cards, and place stickers.

1. Warm-Up & Goal Review (5 min)

• Greet Benjamin and review today’s goals
• Present Task Choice Board for first task selection
• Explain the Sticker Chart reward system

Warm up with a friendly greeting. Show the choice board and let Benjamin pick his first activity. Explain the sticker reward system.

2. Task Initiation Practice (15 min)

• Present chosen activity
• Start Visual Timer Card at 1 min
• If no start after 30 sec → 1 verbal prompt maximum
• Record initiation time & prompt count on Data Collection Sheet

Monitor time-to-initiation and only prompt once if needed. Record data immediately to capture accuracy.

3. Sustained Attention Activity (15 min)

• Choose simple puzzle or reading task
• Set Visual Timer Card to 7 min
• No prompts unless disengaged >15 sec (1 redirection max)
• Note engagement duration & redirections on Data Collection Sheet

Select an engaging puzzle or reading. Allow independent focus, redirect gently only once if Benjamin looks away.

4. Transition Practice (10 min)

• Introduce Transition Countdown Cards
• Show 3-2-1 visuals before switching
• Up to 2 prompts (verbal/visual) to complete move
• Record prompt count on Data Collection Sheet

Use the countdown cards to provide a clear visual for transition. Track prompts delivered.

5. Self-Monitoring & Wrap-Up (15 min)

• Self-monitoring (5 min): Benjamin places stickers for each goal met on Sticker Chart and shares feelings
• Wrap-Up (10 min): Review collected data, celebrate successes, set a home practice using the Task Choice Board

Celebrate each goal met—let Benjamin place stickers. Discuss how he felt being independent. Then summarize data and assign simple home practice.

Visual Timer Card

This card is designed to be printed, laminated, and used with a movable arrow (attach with a brad) to visually track elapsed time in 1-minute increments up to 7 minutes.

How to Use

  1. Rotate the arrow to the desired time mark (1–7 minutes).


  2. Start your activity and watch the arrow move toward 0 as time passes.


  3. When the arrow reaches the starting point, your set time is up!
