Audience

3rd Grade

Time

30 minutes

Approach

Hands-on quests, guided reflection, and strategy practice

Materials

  • Quest Map Poster, - Challenge Cards, - Feeling Wheel Chart, - Emotion Regulation Strategies Sheet, - Rainbow Planning Graphic Organizer, - Timer or Stopwatch, and - Chart Paper and Markers

Prep

Teacher Preparation

10 minutes

  • Print or display the Quest Map Poster and hang it where all students can see.
  • Print and cut out the Challenge Cards and shuffle into a stack.
  • Prepare copies of the Feeling Wheel Chart and Emotion Regulation Strategies Sheet for each student.
  • Make individual Rainbow Planning Graphic Organizer packets.
  • Set up a visible timer or have a stopwatch ready.
  • Review all materials and familiarize yourself with each activity's flow.

Step 1

Introduction & Warm-Up

5 minutes

  • Welcome students and explain today’s adventure: the Mindset Superpower Quest.
  • Show the Quest Map Poster outlining the three stations: Growth Mindset, Emotion Regulation, and Planning Power.
  • Briefly discuss the idea of a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset.
  • Set class expectations: try new challenges, support peers, and reflect honestly.

Step 2

Station 1: Growth Mindset Quest

8 minutes

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group 2–3 Challenge Cards.
  • Each card describes a classroom or puzzle challenge (e.g., tricky math riddle, word scramble).
  • Students attempt the challenge; if they get stuck, they choose a growth mindset mantra (e.g., “Mistakes help me learn!”) and try again.
  • After 5 minutes, groups share one challenge they overcame and which mantra helped them.

Step 3

Station 2: Emotion Regulation

7 minutes

  • Gather students around the Feeling Wheel Chart.
  • Briefly review common emotions and introduce one regulation strategy from the Emotion Regulation Strategies Sheet (e.g., deep breathing, counting to ten).
  • Prompt students to think of a recent moment they felt frustrated or anxious.
  • In pairs, students role-play the scenario and practice the chosen strategy.
  • Invite 2–3 volunteers to demonstrate for the whole group.

Step 4

Station 3: Executive Functioning Challenge

7 minutes

  • Distribute the Rainbow Planning Graphic Organizer.
  • Explain that each color band represents a planning step: goal, tasks, order, time estimate, checkpoint.
  • Present a simple classroom project (e.g., organizing a book display).
  • As a group, fill in the organizer on chart paper, modelling each step.
  • Students then complete their own organizer for a mini-task (e.g., packing up materials) using the Rainbow Planner.

Step 5

Reflection & Wrap-Up

3 minutes

  • Bring students back to circle. Ask volunteers: Which station helped you most today? Why?
  • Review key takeaways: growth mindset mantras, emotion strategies, and planning steps.
  • Encourage students to use at least one strategy tomorrow and share how it went.
  • Congratulate them on completing the Mindset Superpower Quest!
