Mindset Masters Lesson Plan
Students will explore and practice positive thinking through affirmations, engage in empathetic role-play to strengthen social skills, and reflect on growth mindset strategies to boost self-esteem and peer support.
Cultivating positive thinking and social skills helps students build resilience, empathy, and confidence. These competencies support academic success and healthy peer relationships by teaching them to face challenges with a growth mindset.

Prep
Prepare Materials and Space
5 minutes
- Print and cut out Positive Affirmation Flashcards.
- Prepare a stack of Growth Mindset Scenarios and Social Skills Role-Play Cards.
- Make copies of the Self-Reflection Worksheet for each student.
- Review the Group Discussion Guidelines.
- Arrange chairs in a circle and set up the whiteboard with markers.
Step 1
Warm-Up Discussion
5 minutes
- Gather students in a circle and introduce the concept of positive thinking.
- Ask: “What does it mean to have a growth mindset?” and record responses on the whiteboard.
- Distribute a few Growth Mindset Scenarios and read one aloud to illustrate facing challenges positively.
Step 2
Affirmation Activity
8 minutes
- Hand out Positive Affirmation Flashcards face down.
- Students take turns drawing a card, reading it aloud, and sharing a personal example of that affirmation.
- Peers respond with one positive comment or clap to reinforce encouragement.
Step 3
Role-Play Practice
10 minutes
- Pair up students and give each pair a Social Skills Role-Play Cards.
- Each pair acts out the scenario, focusing on active listening and empathy.
- After each role-play, partners switch roles and offer constructive feedback based on the scenario’s objectives.
Step 4
Self-Reflection and Group Share
7 minutes
- Distribute the Self-Reflection Worksheet.
- Students complete prompts about a challenge they overcame using positive thinking and one social skill they practiced today.
- Invite volunteers to share insights following the Group Discussion Guidelines.

Welcome students! Introduce today’s lesson: Mindset Masters. Explain we’ll explore positive thinking and social skills together in fun, interactive ways. Encourage participation and respect.

Use these affirmation cards during the activity. Students draw one card, read it aloud, and share a personal example of how the statement applies to them.

Warm-Up Discussion
Time: 5 minutes

Purpose: Activate students’ prior knowledge of growth mindset and positive thinking to set the tone for today’s lesson.
Instructions:
- Gather students in a circle and explain that we’ll start by exploring what it means to have a growth mindset.
- Ask: “What does it mean to have a growth mindset?”
- Invite 3–5 volunteers to share their ideas and record key responses on the whiteboard.
- Follow up: “How can positive thinking help us when we face challenges in school or friendships?”
- Encourage students to give one specific example.

Supporting a Friend

Sharing Resources

Welcoming a New Student
A new student is standing alone at lunch. Introduce yourself, ask how they’re adjusting, and invite them to join your group.
Apologizing and Repairing
You accidentally bumped into someone’s project and knocked it over. Apologize sincerely, listen to their concerns, and offer to help fix it.
Encouraging Participation
In a group project, one member hasn’t contributed ideas. Address the issue kindly, ask if they need help, and encourage their input.
Negotiating a Disagreement
