Practice mindfulness through art

In this lesson, students will engage in a creative art session focused on mindfulness. By concentrating on the process of drawing or coloring, rather than the final product, students will learn to relax and manage stress. This activity encourages self-expression and helps students develop mindfulness skills, which are essential for emotional well-being and stress management.

Step 1

Introduction to Mindfulness

5 minutes

  • Briefly explain the concept of mindfulness: being present and fully engaged in the moment without judgment.
  • Discuss how art can be a form of mindfulness by focusing on the process rather than the outcome.

Step 2

Art Activity

20 minutes

  • Provide each student with drawing paper and colored pencils or crayons.
  • Instruct students to draw or color anything they like, focusing on the sensations of the pencil on the paper, the colors they choose, and their breathing.
  • Encourage them to let go of any judgment about their artwork and simply enjoy the process.

Step 3

Reflection and Discussion

5 minutes

  • Gather students to share their experiences.
  • Use the Mindfulness Discussion Questions to guide a conversation about how they felt during the activity and what they noticed about their thoughts and feelings.
