Slide Deck
Mindfulness Art: Expressing Calm Creatively
Using art as a tool for mindfulness and stress relief.
Welcome students and introduce today’s focus: using art as a mindfulness tool to manage stress and cultivate calm. Share that this session combines brief meditation with creative exercises.
Lesson Objectives
• Practice mindful breathing and present-moment awareness
• Explore creative expression through guided doodling
• Reflect on how art impacts mood and stress levels
• Plan and create a personalized calming art piece
Point to each objective and explain why it matters at the end of the school year. Emphasize real-world benefits for stress management.
Key Terms
• Mindfulness: Non-judgmental awareness of the present moment
• Emotional Regulation: Managing and responding to emotional experiences
• Creative Expression: Using art to convey feelings and promote well-being
Define each term briefly, invite quick clarifying questions, and remind students these concepts underpin today’s activities.
Mindfulness Warm-Up
- Sit comfortably, hands in your lap
- Inhale slowly for 4 counts
- Exhale gently for 6 counts
- Notice sensations; let thoughts pass without judgment
Lead a 3–4 minute breathing exercise. Model counts aloud (“inhale… exhale…”). After, ask a few students to share one word describing how they feel.
Mindful Doodling Activity
• Open the Mindful Doodling Guide
• Draw simple, repetitive patterns (waves, spirals, lines)
• Focus on each stroke and your breath
• Gently return focus when thoughts arise
Introduce the Mindful Doodling Guide. Circulate and prompt students: “Synchronize a stroke with each breath,” “When your mind wanders, return to the pen.”
Reflective Discussion
In pairs, discuss:
• What did you notice during the doodling?
• How did the activity affect your mood?
• Any unexpected thoughts or sensations?
Distribute the Art Reflection Worksheet. Pair students and give 5 minutes to discuss their observations. Then select volunteers to share highlights.
Calm Creativity Project Overview
• Create an individual art piece (painting, collage, or detailed drawing)
• Incorporate at least one doodle pattern
• Use a calming color palette
• Focus on process, not perfection
• Sketch your plan on the project sheet
Present the Calm Creativity Project Sheet. Review each criterion, emphasizing process over perfection. Encourage students to sketch quick ideas.
Project Work Time
• Begin your mindful art project
• Pause periodically for slow, deep breaths
• Stay present and embrace the creative process
Play soft background music. Remind students every 7–10 minutes to pause, take three deep breaths, and return to their work. Circulate to support and encourage.
Closing & Gallery Walk
• Place your artwork around the room
• Walk silently to observe others’ pieces
• Reflect: Which artwork resonated and why?
• Share one mindfulness technique for future stress
Guide a silent gallery walk: students observe without talking. Afterwards, invite each student to share one mindfulness technique they’ll use when feeling stressed next.
Activity
Mindful Doodling Guide
Purpose

- Black pen, pencil, or fine-tip marker
- A timer or stopwatch (optional)
Steps
- Settle In (1 minute)
- Sit comfortably with both feet on the floor.
- Take three slow, deep breaths, noticing the sensation of air moving in and out.
- Choose a Pattern
- Waves: Draw smooth, flowing curves side by side.
- Spirals: Start at a point and coil outward at a steady pace.
- Circles: Repeat overlapping or concentric circles like ripples.
- Zigzags/Lines: Create consistent angles or parallel strokes.
- Begin Doodling (15 minutes)
- Focus on the motion of your hand and the feel of the pen on paper.
- Breathe naturally—try syncing a stroke with each inhale and exhale.
- When your mind wanders, gently notice the thought and return your attention to the pen.
- Observe (2 minutes)
- Pause and look at your pattern.
- Reflect: How do your hands, breath, and mind feel now compared to the start?
Tips
- There’s no “correct” pattern—embrace imperfections.
- Keep your gaze soft to avoid tension in your neck and shoulders.
- Allow margins on your paper: sometimes white space brings balance.
Begin now, letting each stroke guide you toward a calmer state. Enjoy the process!
