Introduce mindfulness and relaxation techniques

In this lesson, students will be introduced to mindfulness practices and relaxation techniques to help manage stress. Through guided activities and discussions, they'll learn valuable skills to improve their emotional well-being.

Step 1

Introduction to Mindfulness

10 mins

  • Greet the students and briefly explain what mindfulness is: being present and fully engaged with whatever we are doing at the moment.
  • Discuss how mindfulness can help us manage stress and feel calmer.
  • Share a personal story or example of how mindfulness has helped you or someone you know.

Step 2

Guided Relaxation Activity

20 mins

  • Have the students find a comfortable place to sit or lie down.
  • Lead them through a simple guided relaxation exercise:
    1. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose, and slowly let it out through your mouth.
    2. Imagine a peaceful place, like a beach or a quiet forest. Picture it in your mind.
    3. With each breath, feel your body relaxing more and more.
    4. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to your peaceful place.
  • Continue the relaxation activity for about 10-15 minutes.

Step 3

Discussion on Mindfulness Benefits

10 mins

  • Bring the students back together and ask them how they felt during the relaxation exercise.
  • Use the discussion guide to lead a conversation about the benefits of mindfulness and relaxation.
  • Encourage students to share their thoughts and experiences.

Step 4

Exit Ticket

5 mins

  • Hand out the exit tickets and ask students to complete them individually.
  • Collect the exit tickets to assess students' understanding and feelings about the mindfulness practices.

Discuss different scenarios where mindfulness can be beneficial. Encourage students to think of practical applications.

Brainstorm ideas as a group. Examples could include mindful eating, taking mindful walks, or simple breathing exercises.
