Mindful Music and Movement

Introduce mindfulness through music

This lesson introduces kindergarten students to mindfulness through engaging music and dance activities. By focusing on rhythm, tempo, and emotional expression, students will develop creativity and emotional regulation skills. This lesson is important as it helps young learners connect with their emotions and express themselves in a healthy and creative way.

Step 1

Introduction

5 mins

  • Gather students in a circle in an open space.
  • Briefly explain what mindfulness is: paying attention to the present moment.
  • Introduce the idea of using music and movement to explore feelings.

Step 2

Warm-Up Activity

5 mins

  • Play a calming music track.
  • Guide students through simple stretching exercises.
  • Encourage them to focus on their breathing and how their bodies feel.

Step 3

Main Activity: Music and Movement

15 mins

  • Play an upbeat music track.
  • Encourage students to move freely to the music, expressing how it makes them feel.
  • Introduce different tempos and rhythms, asking students to change their movements accordingly.
  • Pause the music occasionally to discuss how different tracks make them feel.

Step 4

Cool-Down and Reflection

5 mins

  • Play a calming music track again.
  • Guide students to sit or lie down comfortably.
  • Lead a short reflection on how the music and movement made them feel.
  • Use the discussion guide to facilitate a conversation about emotions and music.
